Larkspur fire department fought a flare up at the Food Bank grocery last night after a fire destroyed the store early yesterday. Chief Howard Clark said the board of fire underwriters is investigating but no cause or arson ruling is yet available. The small blaze was extinguished and units remained on scene about an hour. The estimated loss neared $100,000.

Edwin Kewin Booth 55 of Oakland died when struck by a car at the Alto wye about 2 15 this morning. James F Scofield 25 Mill Valley employee of Basic Chemical Co Marinship was the driver. Booth owned Booth Chemical Co San Francisco. Funeral plans pending. Last pedestrian death at Alto prior was December 1950.
Fifty three draft age college students from Marin notify local draft officials they will take the second selective service college qualification test at the College of Marin on June 16. Ward Austin, College of Marin president, cites a Draft Director message that Congress mandates deferment plan keeps democracy alive by delaying rather than exempting deferment.

Marin art and garden center hosts Meet the Players a 60 performer hour long program for children on Sunday at 3 p m on the outdoor stage near the Octagon house. James Schwabacher tenor soloist will be interviewed and sing. Other acts include make up by Helen de Bruyn dancing pink elephant and radio skit by Virginia Steiner and son Bobby. Admission free for children with accompanying adults.
Two Republican senators pressed for recall of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to testify over Decembers MacArthur messages. They argued paraphrases of the JCS to MacArthur were incomplete and potentially misleading. Questions focused on whether Washington officials coordinated on Korea policy and whether the original texts were accurately conveyed.
Shirley Wilkins a Bolinas resident and Tamalpais High student will be crowned Miss West Marin at the West Marin Junior Livestock Committee festival at Point Reyes. Attendants May Braun and Sarah Mahar are Tomales High students. The coronation occurs June 16 in the Forster’s Hall with Hugh Turner of KTIM as master of ceremonies.

Alvin Long, a 23 year old private first class in the U S Marines, arrived home aboard the hospital ship Consolation to Mill Valley after losing both legs in a central Korea hill battle. He was wounded by a grenade, evacuated to Japan, then came home three days after the injury with his wife Nancy and parents awaiting him. The Longs have a 15 month old son John and expect another child soon. Long previously served on occupation duty in Japan in 1946 and 1947.
A 46-year-old nurse in Albuquerque is linked to the Mill Valley blaze and other fires in Denver and Colorado Springs. Investigators note the suspect admitted starting the Mill Valley fire at 14 Bernard Street, with mental health concerns and recent divorce papers found in her possession.
Novato opens pre registration for the 1951 1952 school year at the old Novato School building. Parents must present birth certificates to verify child’s date of birth. Kindergarten entry requires 5 years 6 months by Sept and first grade requires age 6. Housing issues force limiting kindergarten enrollment to 70 pupils while four sections are planned for each primary grade.

Robert A. Vogeler, freed after 17 months in a Communist prison, repudiates as rubbish the confession of sabotage and spying against Hungary. He told the National Press Club that his prison ordeal was detailed for the first time, explaining he faced coercive demands from his captors and refused to comply.
