He defended the decision to dismiss General MacArthur, saying MacArthur could not fully back the administration's policies and that U S aid to the Nationalists was largely ineffective.
Three people sustained minor injuries in two weekend crashes on US 101. Paula Cornelison, 27, of San Francisco, and Gerald Peterson, 26, of Fort Bragg, were treated at San Rafael General and Letterman hospitals after Cornelison’s car crossed the double line on Waldo Grade. A driver cited for reckless driving. Minette La Faive, 25, of Memphis, injured in a two car rear end collision on Puerto Suello Hill, also taken to San Rafael General.
Allied troops fought through heavy rain to blunt North Korean counterattacks as UN forces extended toward the Reds main defense line. Artillery and flame throwers drove back entrenched bunkers while infantry and armor pressed north from Yonchon Yongpyong and Yongeng toward Chorwon Kumhwa and Pyonggang. The Eighth Army seeks to seize the triangle of terrain that controls key highways, hoping to unleash flat-country fighting with concentrated artillery and armor.
Washington isabella date. The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that persons who break up meetings discussing public affairs cannot sue for damages under the Civil Rights Act. Justice Jackson authored the majority. Justice Burton dissented joined by Black and Douglas. The Crescenta-Canada Democratic Club sought ruling against five men accused of interrupting a meeting on November 14, 1947 in La Crescenta California.
Marin County supervisors faced a budget tangle as assessor George W Hall urged a $1587 increase to cover postage, stamps, photocopies, mileage, and office costs. The board delayed action, planning to hear department heads at 3 pm while auditors flagged that most orders are invoiced before official purchase requests reach the office. A policy approach to enforce requisition and signature controls was discussed but vetoed by Chairman Bagshaw.
A Mill Valley man James Ivie 30 was killed and 17 year old James Collins of San Anselmo critically injured when a Civil Air Patrol plane piloted by Ivie crashed in hills northeast of Petaluma. Collins, a Tamalpais High School student, was an observer and survived briefly. both victims were connected to the San Francisco UP wire service. Funeral services for Ivie are planned for Wednesday afternoon at the Memorial Chapel.
Marin County supervisors weigh revised state beach park plans for Shell Beach and Stinson Beach as budget talks begin. They note reduced state offers, examine cost shares, and defer final action to fiscal year planning while exploring lease options to add Stinson Beach land.
Larkspur police and the sheriff investigate two burglaries including a Lloyd Roberts station break in on Magnolia Avenue with about 200 dollars in ties stolen. At Bear Valley a summer home of Ludwig Schluckebler was burglarized with dishes tools and household goods missing. several art objects were left untouched. No loss estimate yet.
Seven San Rafael elementary students won one year music scholarships at a San Rafael High School festival before 800 attendees. Winners from West End, B Street, and Coleman Street schools earned private lessons with San Francisco Symphony members funded by festival profits, plus two Hugo Rinaldi scholarships for Street School violinists Nick Marlowe and Deanna Minkler. Awards also honored San Rafael High School musicians and a YMCA International Fiesta queen selection with a mayoral parade in Fairfax.
In unincorporated Marin County May permits remained elevated with a county building inspector reporting 134 dwelling units and five commercial projects authorized. The May total reached 1 713 127 dollars, above April’s 1 396 647 dollars, signaling continued expansion compared with May 1949’s 1 132 581 and two years prior totals.
Three Fairfax teenagers admitted breaking into Rafael Market in San Rafael two weeks earlier. They stole beer, candy, cigarettes and cached the loot on a Panfax Inside. Judge Jordan L Magunelli ordered them wards of the court until age 18, with weekly probation reports and restitution to the grocery store.
The Sausalito Marin City Sanitary district today submitted a proposed $4,005 budget for 1951 52 to the Board of Supervisors. The board set aside $2,050 for salaries, $2,850 for maintenance, and $206 for miscellaneous items.
A committee led by Assemblyman Richard J Delwig rejects the proposed Richmond to San Rafael bridge as hasty planning. Delwig says he faced threats for supporting the project while the panel cites lack of regional authority and calls for master bay area planning before any further funding.
Marinas county supervisors approved a 17365 dollar bid from the Gilnnell Company of San Francisco for installing a fire sprinkler system at the county hospital and farm in Lucas Valley. Chairman Fred Bagshaw warned that delaying could cause disaster while old ward buildings lack automatic protection. The grand jury fireman Albert Batton endorsed the decision citing human safety. An estimate was also requested for a similar installation in the penne hall on the farm mounds.
Chairman T Fred Bagshaw told the county supervisors that the master road plan would not be finished in time due to civic organizations occupying the planner. The board directed Mary R Gilkey to continue work and to stop appearances before clubs until the plan is complete. Fusselman said the public will have time to hear and debate the plan before adoption if Gilkey has time to draft it.
