Governor Earl Warren told Marin residents he makes no fantastic promises and will continue to work faithfully for a better California as he tours the county on his last campaign swing before next Tuesday's election.
Governor Warren spoke at breakfast in Sausalito and San Rafael urging pay as you go funding and warning against debt for future generations. He cited $800,000,000 in postwar highway work and expanded state institutions while noting no new taxes. He contrasted an opponent’s promises with no tax hikes and emphasized personal sacrifice.
Mauna Loa eruption sends lava toward Milolii on the coast encircling seven Milolii houses with residents trapped inside. Civilian Patrol notes eight sightseers marooned on the main highway. later reports say Mr and Mrs Lyman Lincoln found safe at a distant lodge.
A ranch worker found the body of a man at Bull Tail ranch in Nicasio while repairing a fence at noon. Sheriff Walter B. Selimer's deputies were dispatched to investigate as reported by the sheriff's office.
In Marin Superior Court Judge Edward I. Butler heard a demurrer to an amended complaint by the Novato Taxpayers and Property Owners association. The suit seeks to halt sewer assessments and charges fraud by the Novato Sanitary District, originally filed Feb 24 to halt sale of $103,000 sewer bonds.
A federal jury convicts Sgt Lyle Buswell of second degree murder and rape in the killing of WAF Sgt Fairy Decker at Hamilton AFB. Jurors recommend no death penalty, though judge notes uncertainty over the verdict's wording and sets a June 5 motion hearing. Buswell admitted choking Decker after claiming voluntary submission amid alleged intoxication.
County Building reports in Marin's unincorporated areas show May permits totaling 1,132,581 dollars, nearly double last May and a new monthly record. The prior high was July 1947 at 800,000 dollars, with May 1949 at 605,000 dollars.
Building permits in Sausalito nearly doubled from May 1949 with five new homes totaling 70 780 issued to residents including Sidney Rucker Toyon Terrace and Simone Vallarino while Mill Valley saw four new residences totaling 31 372. The county trend shows robust activity as Belveron Gardens and Strawberry Manor No 2 begun with two commercial buildings in Pt Reyes for the RCA station.
County Clerk George Jones reports 704 residents applied for absentee ballots for the Tuesday June 6 primary elections. The deadline to request ballots was 5 p.m. yesterday.
In Los AngelesFourth street salons buzzed as a man with bushy eyebrows sought a $100 bleach job for himself and a friend. Clerks noted they appeared hurried and possibly escapees from San Quentin. staff sent them away for routine pricing. San Quentin reports the two escapes still at large with no leads.
The widow and four children of San Rafael fireman Jack Miller are assured of more than 10 000 in gifts to cover debts and future needs. San Rafael fire commission president Walter Castro Sr. said 9300 has been raised so far, with about 700 expected from San Francisco firemen and over 2500 from a recent San Rafael benefit show. Additional funds are due from a June 10 American Legion hall benefit dance, with much of the money placed in a trust for the children's education and welfare.
Stinson Beach prepares a four day carnival July 1 to 4 at the county park to fund a second unit of the Stinson Beach Community Center. The event features 21 concession booths, an Art in Action display, a Miss Marin bathing beauty contest, a large aerial fireworks show, a free style deep water swim, and a July 4 barbecue under general chairman Joseph Bordanoro and vice chairman Lester B. Sadler Jr.
Dr. Sidney Cohen 33 of Murray Park Larkspur collapsed and died yesterday afternoon while lecturing before about 100 doctors at Langley Porter Clinic UC San Francisco. Funeral plans are pending as the San Francisco coroner investigates. He is survived by his widow Elizabeth and two children. Cohen studied at Yale and New York Medical College and served as a captain in the Medical Corps from 1944 to 1947.

The three day Nautical Fair sponsored by Wilkins Post No. 37 begins with a tea and fashion show, christening of the grounds, and a Crystalcade water show. Miss Nautical Virginia Serna will be crowned at 9 PM, with a floor show at 10:30. Events span fair grounds, McNear’s beach, and the high school pool with a single ticket for all locations.
Native Sons of Fairfax Parlor No 307 begins a three day Fairfax festival at 6 p.m. Parade entries grow with 1 p.m. Sunday start. Louis Dallara serves as parade marshal with All American Judges panel. Units assemble Cascade Drive Bolinas Road, parade to Broadway and Greyhound Bus Depot for review, then to Fairfax Park for entertainment. Mayor Floyd Elliott to award prizes at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The 12th naval district invited bids for seven buildings and a water tank at the Tiburon net depot. Rear Admiral H. W. Johnson announced the project and said plans include cleaning and painting exterior surfaces. Bidding data are available in Johnsons San Francisco federal building office.
