Marin newspaper notes front page chatter in 1912 about Mill Valley proposing a new sewage treatment plant that would end sanitation worries for years. The project never fully materialized, leaving old concerns unresolved.
President Truman will address a joint session of Congress next Wednesday in the state-of the union message. The White House said the date was settled in talks with the four congressional leaders by telephone.
Lyman Lacy 30, is recovering at Ross General Hospital after doctors removed a bullet from his stomach following a Christmas Eve shooting in which Carl Schwartz allegedly killed Mrs Jane Maggard Dickson and wounded Lacy. Schwartz faced arraignment in Santa Rosa court with a preliminary hearing set for January 9.
Sausalito officials and merchants won agreement from the Army Corps of Engineers to set an offshore bulkhead line allowing city construction. A planning commission modification, urged by Col F S Tandy, combines pierhead and bead lines along government property and extends the harbor line to the Rosedale canal and tidelot boundaries.
The State Department advised Judge Sylvester J. Ryan that Valentin A. Gubitchev has no immunity from arrest or trial. Gubitchev, a Russian engineer, faces trial with Judith Coplon and had claimed immunity due to his United Nations post, from which he was suspended after his arrest.
Sacramento District Attorney J. Francis O'Shea said he is inclined to believe Assemblyman Richard McCollister of Mill Valley acted legally in accepting 400 from pension promoter George H. McLain. McCollister explained the funds covered printing and travel for McLain’s 1948 Proposition No 4 campaign.
Sacramento governor Warren signed the Collier anti lobbying bill patterned after federal lobbyist laws. He chose it from three bills in a special session and said California joins 29 states in curb efforts though he seeks stronger controls in March. The measure is named for Assemblyman John L. E. Collier of Los Angeles.
Captain Emory Dawson announces the California Highway Patrol adds three officers on the Marin and Golden Gate Bridge fronts. Patrolmen Marion B. Timmerman Bernard Carroll and John Curtis, Sacramento academy graduates, join a local force now totaling 25 members.
The San Rafael board of supervisors approved annexing the San Pedro school district to San Rafael to take effect July 1. The San Rafael bond plan of 1 375 000 was delayed about a month. a January 17 election date and a nearby 66 000 bond are referenced. 190 signatures supported the petition with no opposition voiced.
Speakers from Bayside Acres and Golf Tract urged support for the bond and a working plan while the board accepted the petition, ending a heated dispute over a separate district. The annexation adds about $1.2 million in assessed valuation to the San Rafael school district.
The Associated Press reports 1949’s six major holidays caused 2717 violent accidental deaths nationwide. Traffic crashes led with 1705 fatalities, followed by 391 drownings, 66 fires, and 555 other accidental deaths. The National Safety Council projects 330 traffic deaths over New Year’s weekend 1950.
Leavenworth Kansas obituary notes Edward H. O Connor, 85, a renowned engineer who helped build the Bay Bridge. He died yesterday after a brief illness. O Connor served as managing engineer for Bridge Builders Inc. which erected the San Francisco Oakland span.

A blue 1937 Ford coupe matching Taft Wilson's escape vehicle was seen in Mill Valley prompting a wide area search. Wilson, a 32 year old forgery convict from Imperial County, remains at large as deputies and prison authorities continue patrols in Mt. Tamalpais and Pt. Reyes areas.
A strong quake rocked Luzon for two and a half minutes hitting Isabela hardest with sea waves and landslides. The Manila Bulletin cites intensity seven three as the third heaviest. An unidentified woman drowned at Mercedes and a boat with eight passengers capsized near Malalan but all were saved. In Naguillan about 250 miles northeast of Manila details incomplete.
Benjamin Tavis of Fairfax sues in Marin Superior Court claiming injuries from a pedestrian auto accident at Sir Francis Drake and Willow. He seeks 10000 in general damages and 650.26 for medical bills, lost wages, glasses, transport, physio, and other losses.
The Young Democrats of California demand James Roosevelt resign as Democratic national committee man. They say his entry into the governor’s race, as eldest son of the late President, shows ambition for personal aggrandizement and call for a leader who can unify the party.
John Joseph Daly former Corte Madera councilman and Marin area resident died at his home 255 Corte Madera Avenue after a short illness. He served at Marinship during the war and worked with the U S Mint in San Francisco before retirement. He was active in Holy Name Society St Patrick's church McKinley Fleet Post Marine Engineers. Survived by widow Mary V Daly and son Robert of San Rafael. Funeral Saturday 9:30am from Jenness Chapel San Anselmo with high mass at St Patrick’s Larkspur and Rosary tonight 8. Interment Mt Olivet San Rafael.
