The Marin county health department tallies show 1950 with fewer communicable diseases than 1949. Chickenpox led with 334 cases, mumps 181, measles dropped to 23, and several conditions such as gonorrhea and polio appeared in smaller numbers.
A Marin Guardian column from Rafael Marin critiques newsroom tensions with the county fire department over coverage of fires and penalties for reporting. It cites a Larkspur homicide report, noting initial misstatements about injuries and the coroner’s office confirmation of only bullet wounds.
District Attorney A E Bagshaw told the board there is no legal authority for the county to hire a public defender in inferior courts and that current court appointed attorneys may be adequate. He noted public defenders would cost more and that county bar members gain experience from such appointments. The board took no official action.
Marin County firefighting chief Camillo Mello faces a Marin Grand Jury after the Board of Supervisors ordered him to file answers to charges raised by County Auditor Leon de Lisle. The jury adjourned after an all day session and will subpoena Mello for January 11 appearance. De Lisle alleged unorthodox procedures in the fire department, including improper inventories and requisitions.
Marin County tuberculosis association reports 13,000 dollars in receipts from the annual Christmas Seal Sale and plans a February start for the Mobile X-ray unit to conduct case finding at Marin schools including Tamalpais high College of Marin Marin Catholic high and San Rafael high. The civilian staff at Hamilton Field will back the first tour at the air force request.
Mayor Robert Austin announced that San Rafael residents will be asked next week to volunteer for civil defense service. A disaster council will be formed with City Manager Boege, and a door to door campaign will distribute volunteers cards, a Survival Under Atomic Attack pamphlet, and request volunteer details including skills, equipment, and blood donation capability.
William Ladewig known as Steamboat Bill, 76, a motel janitor in Sausalito, was struck and killed by a car driven by Pearl Myre, 47, of San Francisco, while crossing Highway 101 near Alto Hill after heavy traffic and poor visibility. An eyewitness, Linton Whitby Jr., described the crash as brakes squealed and a body fell to the road. Ladewig had lived in Sausalito 25 years and worked at the Alto Vista Motel for four years.
Tamalpais Valley residents are urged to attend a civilian defense meeting at the Improvement Clubhouse at 7 30 tonight. Civilian defense director William Mibach announced the event and encouraged participation.
The Marin Community Chest reports seven thousand added to the fund during the pre Christmas drive bringing total to about $88,272 with expectations of $2,000 more. Proceeds aiming toward the $118,000 goal reached 76.6 percent.
The San Rafael man, recently displaced before Christmas, remains unemployed as few suitable jobs are available. He has three children and a ill wife, mounting medical and living costs. Despite applications in Marin and San Francisco, only heavy manual labor offers appeared, which he cannot perform due to disability. He seeks county work to care for his family at home.
Oliver J. Carter aged 39, ex state senator from Redding, was sworn in as a permanent federal district judge in San Francisco. The ceremony, led by his father Justice Jesse Carter of the state supreme court, followed a prior interim swearing in last September.
The FBI says John Douglas Biddleman, 25, of Redwood City, admitted participation in a San Francisco tavern holdup during which operator Emil Daubin, 46, of San Anselmo, was critically wounded. Biddleman was arrested in San Francisco and jailed on robbery and assault with intent to murder charges. Daubin underwent spleen removal after the bullet lodged there.
LOS ANGELES, California. Speaker Sam Collins seeks to keep assembly committees in Sacramento for February hearings. The legislature convenes January 8 and will recess about three weeks, resuming around March 19. Collins argues February hearings shorten delays and reduce session duration.
Newly elected directors met Tuesday at the Buckeye restaurant to elect officers and organize for the coming year. Lyon is in New York on business. Roland Irish of Bank of America was elected first vice president and Luther William Conover of Trade Fair second vice president. Reelected secretary treasurer Ed Long and a slate including ey Bechtel Corp John News Dean Harlan Robert Rose and Dr Delman Smith was announced.
Mill Valley city manager Silas R. Richards warned residents about low cooperation with the civil defense program. He urged attendance at four meetings on January 8 to 11 and announced a January count siren test from 10 to 11 am. Postcards are requested from outlying areas to map sound zones and aux sirens. A film screening of You Can’t Beat the A bomb is planned at Sequoia Theatre January 18 to 20.
