Police Probe Purple Heart Unit In San Rafael
San Rafael police ordered four solicitors off the streets after members admitted doubt money collected would reach wounded veterans. Chief Frank Kelly said preliminary investigations indicate the group may solicit nationwide with none of the funds reaching veterans. Emmett O Rourke, identifying as a national representative, said 25 percent of collections plus expenses, with a 16 percent receiver share, and claimed a permit from City Manager Ray Boege. Authorities will pursue state and federal action to investigate the Comrades of the Purple Heart, whose headquarters are in Willoughby, Ohio.

Highway Patrol Probes Fatal Crash of Rio Vista Girl
Rio Vista 22 year old Jewel Lugille Tondre died instantly when her car collided head on with another on Highway 101 near St. Vincent's school. Thomas Ducey 69 of Strawberry Avenue said he did not see oncoming traffic as he pulled from a side road. Ducey and Thelma Fletcher suffered minor injuries in separate weekend incidents. Six Bret Harte district homeowners in San Rafael entered a Christmas decorating contest. First prize went to Claude Gustafson of 362 Irwin for a Santa Claus in a boat tableau, receiving a sterling urn and tray plus $25 cash and the perpetual award for one year. Runner up Carl L. Hymiés won $15 for a Nativity scene on his front window. Other prizes included $10 awards to R.W. Swanson and T. E. Pannier for a Bethlehem star display and a giant wreath respectively. Bus Theft Suspects Arrested After Joyride to Petaluma
McDaniel 38 of San Rafael and Lawrence Smith were jailed on grand theft after taking Greyhound bus 1253 from the San Rafael station with the sign reading Special. They drove it to Novato and Boyes Springs before abandoning it near a pole in Petaluma. Police learned of the missing bus from a Greyhound employee amid holiday duties.
