First outdoor Yule tree lights up in Corte Madera
The Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Corte Madera lights its pine tree for the thirty fifth year claiming to be the first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree. The tree grew from six feet in 1916 when Harry T. Spencer and James Yarington installed eight lights. Now 80 feet tall, the Pacific Gas and Electric crew added 300 lights. Expenses were covered by the Marvelous Marin Twelve club. Lights stay on until Epiphany January 6 for the candlelight pageant and burning of greens closing the season.
