UN Artillery Thunders Against Onrushing Reds at Hungnam

Allied naval air and ground forces pounded Chinese and Korean forces pressing the Hungnam beachhead in northeast Korea. The U S Air Force reportedly abandoned Yonpo airfield, Hungnam’s main airport, Sunday, after engineers destroyed supplies and disabled aircraft left behind.

Eisenhower to Form International Army for Europe

The 12 Atlantic Pact nations announce Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower will start in 1951 to organize an international army to defend Europe. German participation in a centralized force is planned, with talks urged among the occupying powers Britain France and the United States and West Germany to join.

County Tax Office Reports Record Mail Collections

Tax collections by mail reached the heaviest in the county’s history totaling 2.49 million dollars for late October through November 5. Office head M F Donohue noted 80 percent came by mail and that overall county charges show a 60 percent collection, similar to last year. He said delinquents will be known after January 10 and that space is already tight due to a surge from new special assessment districts.

Auditor Submits 21 Page Marin Fire Dept Report

County Auditor Leon de Lisle filed a 21 page report with the Marin County Board of Supervisors accusing the fire department of unorthodox finances and poor budgeting. The document now heads to the grand jury meeting December 27. It cites improper invoicing housing private car work in the shop and outside purchases at higher prices. It also faults lack of inventory control and delayed requisitions. The report calls for a competent fire chief and subordination of the chief to board policy. The chief is expected to reply within days.

Joint County City Defense Planning Board Set Up

A joint county and city defense planning board was established by the Marin board of supervisors. Delegates from Marin's nine cities and unincorporated areas will form the board to coordinate civilian defense. The resolution outlines responsibilities in welfare, information, fire services, warnings, evacuation, health, utilities and other defense matters. Col. E Carl Engelhart was asked to submit a plan for unincorporated areas, and fire chiefs were named in order of command: C M Johansen, Camilio Mello, Leslie Armager, Matts Perry.

Soft Drink Prices Raised One Third

Price of soft drinks to wholesalers in Marin County rose one third yesterday. Retail prices varied by store but followed the trend. The rise is expected to lift retail prices to 7 cents in stores and 10 cents in vending machines across northern California, prompting coin-machine conversions.

Hospital OKs 7000 Equipment Items at $200000

Marin General Hospital has state and federal approval for 7000 equipment items costing 200000 dollars. The package includes X-ray room addition, minifilm unit for tuberculosis detection, and various hospital furnishings and supplies. Two thirds of funds come from government. one third from local taxes.

Surprising marriage of Lucy Utterback and Jack Eisen city editor of the Independent Journal occurred at noon in St. Joan of Arc Church Las Vegas Nevada Monsignor John T. Smith officiated. The bride resigned from the paper to visit her father in Florida and the couple plan a Florida trip after Christmas then Ohio in the new year for Jack to finish studies at Antioch College.

Hamilton Field Airman in Car-Clouting Case

Arthur Lewis Betts a 17 year old Hamilton Field airman was to be certified to Marin juvenile court after sheriff deputies arrested him on a car clouting charge. Betts was caught driving away in a car with headlights radio and other equipment reported stolen from another airman's car.
