Fairfax councilman and ex mayor Harry Heifetz plans a April re election on a three man slate with Frank Main and a possible dark horse. Heifetz declines naming the third candidate as local scenes stay calm while a bar room anecdote hints at civilian life after service.
Nine people were injured in Marin county automobile accidents over the weekend. A head on collision on Sir Francis Drake boulevard near Ross General Hospital injured four, including drivers Marion Palmos and Peter Moreci. Others injured were a couple in the Palmos car and a Ross resident passenger. Several minor crashes occurred later with three injured on the Golden Gate Bridge approach and two more with minor injuries near Black Point.
A 12 day old infant Bruce Howard Drumm died in his crib at Hamilton Field after being found by his parents face down on a soft mattress with a pillow under it. Deputy Coroner Keaton attributed death to suffocation noting no blankets were involved and an autopsy would determine details. The body was taken to Guy W Jenness mortuary in San Anselmo.
The Board of Supervisors set a public hearing for 2 p.m. December 28 on a petition signed by 193 San Pedro voters to annex the San Pedro district to the San Rafael district. San Rafael officials urged action before a bond election planned for January 17 while questions about transportation, contracts, and tax effects were raised by local leaders.
Dr. Robert G. Rosenberg announces a county wide contest with $100 in cash prizes sponsored by the Marin Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Independent Journal. Entrants must mail or drop off entry blanks by tomorrow to compete for $50 first, $25 second, $15 third, and $10 fourth prizes.
The Most Rev. John J. Mitty led a high mass at the rebuilt Mission San Rafael Arcangel with a procession from St. Raphael's rectory. He spoke on the resurrection glory of the mission and urged rights of God and men to be acknowledged.
Johnny Virzi a 27 year old Corte Madera resident died in Sonoma hospital after his car hit a telephone pole Dec 15 near Shellville. He was born in San Rafael and survived by three sisters and four brothers. He belonged to the Sailors Union of Pacific and Bartenders Union of San Rafael. Funeral arrangements are pending at Keaton's mortuary.
Governor Warren's lobby control bill clears Senate rules committee and heads for floor debate. Senator Harold Powers notes a late floor decision possible as printing delays loom. The measure, backed by 27 of 40 senators, imposes campaign finance disclosures and felony penalties, with private-plea bans for lawyer-legislators. passage remains uncertain amid calls to delay or kill the proposal.
San Anselmo P T A groups from local schools collect toys for Marin County children. Donors place gifts under the Christmas tree at the American Trust bank in San Anselmo. County welfare authorities will distribute the gifts to needy families.
San Rafael fire crews responded to a still alarm late Saturday night at the Mar Vista Motors used car lot on Fourth Street near Lincoln Avenue to battle a blaze involving a car seat.
A weekend storm boosted San Rafael rainfall to 7.52 inches this year, surpassing 1947 totals. The sequence included 1.19 inches Friday night and Saturday, with 0.34 inches today and yesterday. High tides breached a levee near Irene Street, flooding lowland areas and parts of San Quentin Point road, though no damage was reported.
Marin County unincorporated and non fire district areas end fire season according to Fire Chief Carmillo Mello. Burning in daylight under observation may continue but no burning after dark to avoid false alarms.
Bolinas resident Spicer escaped serious injury after contact with a high voltage transmitter during a routine check. Walter Wagner acted quickly and pulled the switch to cut power. Spicer suffered only first degree burns while about 11,000 volts were circulating at his Inverness home.
