Johnny Verzi, a well known Corte Madera resident, was critically injured when his car hit a telephone pole near Shellville in Sonoma County. He was taken to Sonoma Community hospital unconscious with skull fracture and suspected brain injury, jaw fractures, and other injuries.
The College of Marin board authorized President Ward H. Austin to lead a localized survey of occupational needs and employment opportunities in Marin and adjacent counties. The study aims to align junior college technical education with expected vocational demand and follows a state advisory committee’s statewide results.
The Richmond San Rafael ferry strike ended at noon. President Oliver L Olson Jr said boats would run at 5 40 a m tomorrow with old schedules. Edwin Barton said workers must report to resume service. The new contract runs to March 1 1951, cuts to a 40 hour week with 11 percent pay rise over 1948, and aims to ensure lasting peace. The five and a half month strike hurt Marin and Contra Costa counties and related commerce.
Marin officials clash over adding a fly tying course in local schools with funds under scrutiny. A board member labels it culture while another urges fiscal restraint to protect school and state money. Also notes a Marin Junior Chamber event with Roger Kent and Dick McCollister seen together at a bar.
Robert A. Carey a 63-year-old San Anselmo building contractor was fined 750 dollars and placed on two years probation for filing false plans and specifications for veterans homes. The federal judge also ordered restitution of 3000 dollars to the defrauded veterans.
Robert Pagani 30, county fire warden at San Anselmo, indicted for conspiracy to commit arson, pleaded not guilty before Judge Edward J. Butler. He seeks a jury trial with trial set for January 27 and bail raised to 3000. Lorenzo Membrero 39 of San Rafael also pleaded not guilty to rape, with jury trial requested and bail set at 2000.
The state Public Utilities commission opened a hearing on Pacific Gas and Electric’s request for a six per cent electricity rate increase across northern and central California. The proposal, opposed by the U.S. government, would raise costs by about 8.9 million dollars, while federal agencies warn of a 180 thousand dollar annual impact on Uncle Sam’s electricity bill.
San Rafael residents will receive a bonus Christmas mail delivery on Sunday announced by Postmaster C. H. Pete Hayden. Charles L. Mueller will also add an extra delivery on San Rafael rural route No 1 to prevent a Monday backlog due to accumulated mail.
A 4 month old infant, Robert W. Smithies, died of suffocation after vomiting food in a cabin at the Oak Tree Inn south of Hamilton Field. Mrs Smithies found the baby in the crib in a night bed check. Autopsy conducted to confirm cause of death. Father, S/Sgt Robert W Smithies, had recently been transferred to Anchorage Alaska.
In Mill Valley last night Richard M. Nixon urged voters to back the Republican party’s superior alternate program. He warned that failing to endorse it would push the nation toward a welfare state and Britain’s economic decline. He spoke to civic leaders while seeking to unseat Senator Sheridan Downey and outlined a campaign formula stressing GOP aims over the Truman program.
Max Esslinger a 52 year old Larkspur steam fitter and amateur radio operator pleaded guilty to two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a five year old girl. Judge Edward I Butler sentenced him to one year suspended in county jail and five years probation with a key term he must move out of Larkspur. Probation Officer Edmund Blum recommended against probation.
San Rafael city manager Ray Boege reflected on two decades of service as he marked the 20th anniversary of his employment with the city. Boege arrived in 1929 as assistant city engineer after UC civil engineering graduation, later serving under H. K. Brainerd, deputy county auditor, and the state highway division before becoming city engineer and then city manager. Born in San Francisco, Boege’s career spans decades of municipal leadership.
Marin county schools end a holiday term with 9058 elementary pupils 2330 high school students and 1017 College of Marin attendees finishing classes. Teachers also enjoy the break as no sessions are planned. Christmas trees and programs marked the festive closures, with more events tonight.

City of Fairfax files condemnation suit in Marin Superior Court seeking a third of a mile of right of way from St. Rita's church to the Manor turnaround. Target properties include Orey J. Short and Coroner J. Ray Keaton estate administrator along a 1733 foot NWP railroad strip. Deputy District Attorney Richard Sims Jr sought approval to condemn for the county road project.
The Rod and Gun Club of San Rafael holds its 1950 regular meeting in Scout Hall tonight at 8 o clock. Members will elect new officers for the year.
