The Division of San Francisco Bay Toll Crossings presents seven proposed spans between Marin and Contra Costa counties. At a 10 a.m. public meeting tomorrow in the Marin County courthouse, officials will discuss construction costs and traffic flow for each site.
Herbert Madden of Sausalito, a former mayor and boat builder, was elected president of the Sausalito Marin City sanitary board. The meeting occurred at Madden’s home where he was bedridden. Walter Baird was chosen secretary, with Robert Gunn and Eric Barnett among others appointed to head committees. The board fixed the second Wednesday monthly as the regular meeting date at Sausalito city hall and waived meeting attendance pay for now. A loyalty oath was signed by board members.
The state will present at a San Rafael meeting tomorrow the first public briefing on Bay Toll Crossings sites. Ralph Tudor and Norman C. Raab will discuss seven routes from Point San Pablo to Tiburon and San Quentin Wye. The state will seek public input before selecting a recommended route.
San Rafael boards consider extending bus service for 100 new pupils from 300 new homes in San Rafael Meadows and Santa Venetia with January startup. A request to extend runs to the airport area was denied. purchase of a station wagon and use of a panel truck are under review. Property acquisitions near Laurel Dell school were approved for Sun Valley and Woodland Avenue parcels.
About 1,000 San Anselmo residents signed an initiative petition urging a special election to repeal the self serve ordinance. City Attorney Buresh questioned legality of county clerk certified signatures while County Clerk Jones defended the check and Deputy verification. Officials debated who may certify and validate signatures as petitions remained filed and nonreturnable.
Kentfield today neared its community chest quota with 7764 dollars reported and only 635 dollars needed to reach the top. Co chairs L Earle David and J Chambers announced more volunteers from Chest agencies aiding effort from Ross to Larkspur, with 503 dollars more pledged than last year and more donors than in 1949.
About 60 000 Allied troops moved toward evacuation ships from Hungnam as massed Chinese forces pressed the perimeter. The operation aimed to withdraw from the northeast Korea beachhead or face heavy attack in the planned secret destination beyond the Communist lines.
Russia rejects an Asian Arab cease-fire proposal for Korea arguing the United States and Britain would misuse a truce to prepare another attack. Jacob Malik says no peace while UN troops remain and opposes any resolution maintaining foreign troops. Civilians panic as Hungnam evacuation proceeds and Allied forces defend the beachhead while field units withdraw.
The San Rafael chamber of commerce merchants committee urged all retail stores to stay open evenings tomorrow and Saturday night and every night next week including the Saturday before Christmas. Stores already open Friday. Roy Michaels announced the recommendation as a response to Marin night shopping demand.
Washington officials said the administration will ask Congress to authorize a new defense housing program with a billion dollar level. The Housing and Home Finance agency drafts the legislation for approval and outlines how federal housing plans will be supervised.
Marin landlords were urged to exercise utmost restraint in rent increases by William A. Hamilton, president of the Marin County real estate board. He spoke as housing measures decontrol change loomed, noting some rents may need adjustment but criticizing excessive rents to force tenants out and urging use of state law.
A San Rafael resident Mason challenged his Sanitary Board candidacy claiming ineligibility. Mason listed Sausalito address at 67 San Carlos Ave the home of Justice John J. Miller who backed Mason. Mason won 1,437 votes finishing sixth of eleven amid a slate urging voters to break Sausalito political influence.
Weather forecast shows occasional rain in the Bay Region tonight and Thursday morning, followed by partly cloudy conditions Thursday afternoon with little temperature change. Lows tonight expected in the 48 to 53 degree range. Sierra Nevada remains cloudy south with rain north of Yosemite.
Paul H Henley formerly on the Novato Sanitary District board charges greed and incompetence in district affairs. He alleges trunk lines were laid near future developments enabling builders to tap in cheaply, citing lines along the railroad and a poultry ranch area. He says he joined to stop a perceived real estate favored deal and praises a new board president for fairness.
A three and a half year old Sausalito boy Roderic Lawrence Bringel was killed when a car backed from a curb. Driver John Young 23 of Marin City said he did not see the child until the thud. The child played with a stick near 415 Bonita street when he stepped into the path of the vehicle. Mrs Bringer heard brakes and ran out. The driver and his father were not cited.
A Sausalito resident, Mrs. Rudolph Samson, 60, was injured when her 1950 Cadillac was hit by Carl Bond, 37, of Millbrae, at Sausalito’s Vista Clara road near Monte Mar Vista. Bond, owner of an amusement machine firm, was taken to Franklin hospital with several broken ribs while Samson received knee and back injuries at Children’s hospital San Francisco. Highway patrols planned further investigation with no citations yet. A second crash occurred at Tennessee Valley road and Highway 1 in heavy fog, injuring no one but issuing Lloyd Gardner, 34, of Mill Valley, speeding and license violations after his car skidded into John Taylor, 53, of Sausalito.
