The city of San Rafael is nearly ready to begin two major street projects. The plans will affect county and city traffic flows as construction proceeds through the coming months.
City Manager Ray Boege told the Marin Board of Supervisors plans exist for D street grade and Third street work to start in early spring. He said cost share agreements with the county apply and a formal approval of $7,500 in county funds was requested. disputes over the agreement prompted a records check and a planned post year review with County Road Commissioner Carl Clow and Supervisor George Whiteley.
The Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Corte Madera hosts the opening of Teen Town aimed at high school and college students. Activities run Fridays 7:30 to 10 p.m. with no religious or socioeconomic restrictions and a Sadie Hawkins dance planned for the near future.
In foggy wet conditions two highway crashes occurred yesterday in California. Charles Price, 33, of Larkspur, escaped injury on the Waldo grade when an unidentified car appeared from fog and struck his vehicle. the other vehicle left the scene. Ruth Lacoste, 54, of Tiburon, escaped injury in a second sideswipe on the Tiburon road with an unknown car.
Kentfield Fire Chief Fred Ruhland blasted the Board of Supervisors for a plan to hand rural fire protection to the state. He urged an independent fire commissioners board and reported Marin’s Fire Chiefs endorse the idea of keeping the county department. Kentfield Civic League backed Ruhland, forming a committee to monitor the issue, warning that state takeover would shrink stations and strain city crews.
United States and Britain support a Middle East Asian plan to seek a cease fire basis in Korea. Warren Austin presses for cease fire before other issues. Rau notes Chinese stance and calls for a direct Chinese voice after cease-fire groundwork. Debate delayed to consult governments. vote 48 to 5 with four abstentions.
Cpl Bruno Franchetti of San Rafael formerly with Marin countys reserve Company of the Kores was wounded twice in Korea and evacuated to a Japanese military hospital. He was injured November 30 by shrapnel and December 3 by a machine gun bullet but says he is not seriously wounded.
Marin county junior chamber of commerce and the Independent Journal sponsor a Marin Christmas decoration contest now in its third year. Cash prizes total 100 dollars with four awards from 50 to 10 dollars. Judging runs December 21 22 from 7 to 9 p m. Entry due by 5 p m December 20 postmark. Winners announced December 23.
Marin county board members spent a half hour at the jail kitchen to assess food quality during contract renewal talks. They found inmates ate lamb stew and approved keeping Krempel's Delicatessen as supplier at 38 cents per meal. Sheriff Sellmer reported no complaints and noted meals are largely jail cooked from department supplies. Other actions included radio equipment funding, a county farm boiler check, and a Reed school district bond sale bid.
Nearly 10 percent of the remaining $37 000 needed by Marin Community Chest has been collected. Chest Manager Aubrey Burns announced today countywide reports show $3 547 collected leaving $33 453 still to be raised. He hoped to reach at least one third by tomorrow and urged residents to give as much as possible.
The Marin Sonoma Fourth District agricultural fair grant of 21000 dollars was deferred by the state public works board due to a lack of fair funds. The decision came from Sacramento and was reported by the Associated Press.
Marin official Matt Graham answered five questions from the Sausalito Citizens council in a letter to the board of supervisors. He stated costs for directors quarters at 48 731.71 dollars and that he voted for the expenditure. He backed the loan for transfer to state but opposed using it for a new road. He supported Grenier plan funds and a new bridge approach if state pays. He opposed the garage and noted the bridge runs 11 vehicles but did not provide cost details. He did not reveal stance on a 15000 dollar general manager salary increase and has not protested bridge vehicle use for personal business.
The Federation of Marin County Commuters Clubs urged Pacific Greyhound Lines to adopt 40 ride punch cards replacing current commute books. Thomas D. Hardcastle of Novato, president, announced the plan at a Public Utilities Commission hearing in San Francisco yesterday.
