Mr and Mrs Donn Emmons of Mill Valley and about 200 others were stranded for six hours when fog grounded ferries, forcing a mud bank hold near San Quentin. They were en route to a house warming in Orinda and waited aboard until the next boat to Richmond and back.
In Marin County a letter mixup prompts reader notes to be printed while the Russian River ferry crowds of 200 in 50 cars endure fog. The vessel runs aground near Richmond, Coast Guard and tug Calumet assist, 53 year old William Hobson suffers a heart attack, and the ship finally reaches port after a 6 hour delay. Nearby Marin Rod and Gun Club members also grounded after crab fishing, later able to free the boat as tide rose.
Levee sections north of the San Rafael Sanitary District treatment plant washed out in last week’s rain and high tide. About 150 feet of levee was destroyed and smaller sections along the San Rafael canal. repairs by the county mosquito abatement district helped prevent flooding near the bay and airport. City officials oppose public funding for private-property levee repairs. sandbags had been used to maintain the levee. Twelve families returned to homes on Franklin and Alice streets after flooding. Corte Madera's First Street suffered damage with repairs underway and Meadowsweet Avenue closed to traffic.
Marin sheriff's deputies arrested James McGuire 21 Lagunitas after he allegedly fired five shots at his brother in law Henry Lefebvre over a dispute about GI shoes. McGuire said he fired into the air to scare him. George Suttley 21 aided in the escape but was not held.
Olema volunteers oppose Board of Supervisors plans to replace Marin County Fire with state forestry services. In a December 9 letter signed by Louis Bloom and Gino Petroni the group cites past strong Marin firefighting records and warns that removing county guidance and equipment would endanger the community. They acknowledge county mistakes but urge corrective action instead of political moves. The Taxpayers Association and West Marin Lions Club also oppose the shift.
County Fire Chief Camille Mello faced sharp criticism at the board of supervisors meeting over alleged misstatements about the department. Chair Fred Bagshaw and Mayor Carmel Booth argued the chief caused alarm about rural fire protection while V.P. Edna Foster urged caution about ceding control to the state. A public meeting will follow once the state proposal and auditor’s survey are reviewed.
A head on collision on the Black Point cut-off at 7:30 this morning injured Henrietta Schumacher 34 of Bothell Washington and Ray L Greenwood 40 of Napa a claims adjuster for a San Francisco firm. They treated for superficial injuries at Hamilton Field Base Hospital. Greenwood reportedly tried to pass two cars in rain and fog when Schumacher’s east bound car struck his. Both cars were nearly demolished.
San Anselmo police investigated a case of switched automobiles after Michael Marculescu reported a missing car parked near his San Anselmo home. Officers located a second car registered to William Lusch of the Carmel hotel in San Rafael, a car Lusch did not realize was missing. Chief Don Wood stated Lusch could not explain the situation and denied being near Wood court.
A Marin City laborer admitted stealing several men’s suits valued at 300 dollars from a housing project. He was sentenced to six months in county jail and fined 150 dollars by Justice Walter W. Derr. He said the suits belonged to Christine Coleman’s husband, now overseas with the army, and were pawned in Sausalito for seven dollars.
Marin Community Chest reports total donations of 996 toward a 36000 target for an emergency clean-up drive. The effort requires 6000 daily for six days to meet next Sunday's deadline. Eight new agency teams, led by Mrs. Helen Walton, move into San Rafael areas as Chest and civic leaders pursue additional business and personal donor prospects.
The Bay Area Council will present a master plan for simultaneous construction of two San Francisco bay crossings at a meeting of officials and legislators from the nine counties near the bay.
San Francisco reports that Pacific Telephone and Telegraph workers authorized a strike if wage demands are unmet. CIO Communications Workers of America Northern California Division 5 seeks 17 cents an hour across the board, while the company offers 2 percent. CWA covers about 10,000 workers in northern California and Nevada and will continue negotiations before striking.
Lloyd Forbes 56 a Mill Valley resident and San Francisco manufacturer died when struck by a high wave while fishing at the mouth of Salmona creek on Bodega Bay Sonoma county. His body was recovered after three hours and funeral services are set for 9 30 a m Wednesday at Russell and Gooch mortuary Mill Valley. He is survived by his widow Helen J Forbes two sons Ronald C Forbes and Lloyd Williamson Forbes Jr a brother Harold and several relatives. Burial will be at Golden Gate national cemetery and he was a member of Mill Valley American Legion Post 284 and a Son of the American Revolution.
A bill extending federal rent controls until March 31 next year cleared Congress and was sent to President Truman. The House approved a compromise of Senate and House versions after the Senate gave its okay on Friday.
Tokyo dispatch reports General MacArthur stating the United Nations command remains unbeaten and in high morale as U.S. Marines and doughboys push toward Hamhung. He said Chinese losses are exaggerated and units are intact despite heavy fighting and outnumbered conditions.
Frank Medeiros a 55 year old Oakland freight clerk and former Southern Pacific employee became the 117th known death by self harm on the Golden Gate Bridge. He left hospital confinement three weeks earlier and rode a cab to the toll plaza where he said he would meet someone in the span. A passing motorist gave him a ride and he jumped about 500 feet south of the northern entrance. His body was found by highway patrolmen and military police on the Fort Baker road below.
Marine Cpl Robert L Snellgrove formerly of San Anselmo and Tamalpais high school graduate is wounded in Korea's First Marine Division after being called to active service in Marin last August. His brother Cpl also serves in Korea. Parents Mr and Mrs Charles Snellgrove now live in Cloverdale and report he may be reached via First Provisional Casualty Company FMF FPO San Francisco.
The First Marine Division suffered more than 30 percent casualties in a bold breakout from a Chinese trap in Korea. Estimates suggest 6000 to 7000 losses across three infantry regiments, including frostbite cases. Gen. Cates said Lt. Gen. Shepherd reported the unit is in high spirits despite the heavy fight.
Thirteen Asian and Middle East countries met behind closed doors to consider final terms of a new Korean peace plan. They planned to submit the plan to the UN Assembly committee later today. India's Sir Benegal Rau said no word had come from the Chinese Communists on halting at the 38th parallel.
Four television sets valued at 1000 dollars and a panel truck were stolen from Brown's Furniture at 38 Miller Avenue Mill Valley late Friday night or Saturday morning. The rear door was pried open. no other items were taken. The truck was recovered by San Francisco police on Embarcadero Saturday.
