Occasional rain expected tonight and tomorrow across Bay Regions with a slight temperature change. Lows tonight in the 47 to 52 degree range and Sierra Nevada sees rain at low levels and snow above a high elevation.
A B20 bomber returning to Lowry air force base crashed into a row of East Denver homes, killing eight airmen and injuring civilians and crew members. The four engine craft struck five houses near Lowry during a training run, with searchers still checking wreckage for additional casualties.
The city announces the annual parade proceeds as planned despite rain. Volunteers are urged to assist with giant balloons along Mourily street after 6 pm. The route shifts east Fourth Street to Lincoln Avenue and B Street to Albert Wield, with the start at Fourth and streets at 7 pm. Santa Claus arrives by land after a rain delay.
Strong and choppy waves along San Francisco Bay forced the Richmond San Rafael Ferry & Transportation Co to suspend service between San Rafael and Richmond for eight hours over Saturday night and Sunday morning. Crews feared car loading hazards as ferries rocked. captains reported no swamping danger though waves battered the vessels and cars sustained damage on board.
J B Lloyd of 244 San Francisco Blvd San Anselmo reports selling a town mower for cash almost immediately after the Independent Journal want ad appeared. He says the buyer hurried over as soon as the paper hit the street and urges others to place ads.
Heavy winds toppled trees Saturday night cutting power to vast Marin County areas. Pacific Telephone reports 1700 central office lines out near San Rafael due to a cable fault. Firemen freed the damaged cable manhole for repairs while RCA at Bolinas went off air from 4:18 to 7:45 p.m. Coast Guard lighthouse at Point Reyes stayed on with an auxiliary generator.
Interior Minister Fouad Serag el Din told the chamber of deputies that nine Egyptians were killed and 68 wounded in a battle with British soldiers in the Suez area. The fighting was described as ongoing.
Heavy downpour drenched Kentfield with about four inches overnight, Saturday into Sunday, while nearby Corte Madera and Larkspur saw relief. Flooding closed roads, stalled buses, and a Kent Woodlands home suffered a hillside slide that crushed part of the dwelling and blocked access. Four people were injured in weekend highway accidents, none seriously.
Autos stalled in San Rafael as heavy rain overwhelmed storm drains. Water rose two feet on Irwin street and flooded basements and streets up to Fourth street. Schools closed, others open tomorrow. Police and motorists aided stranded drivers amid widespread street flooding.
Flooding across South Marin and nearby areas forced morning school suspensions in Belvedere Tiburon and Sausalito while Mill Valley classes began late. Tamalpais Valley and Lovell avenues reported slides, flooded basements, and power outages as residents reeled from high winds and rising waters.
San Rafael High will suspend adult classes for this evening due to rain flooding the furnace room and disrupting the heating system. Principal I. A. Gearhart announced the interruption is necessary to protect facilities and ensure safety.
Ukiah traffic conference set by the Redwood Empire association has been postponed amid flood and storm conditions blamed for the delay. The notice, issued today, cites weather as the reason for rescheduling the Ukiah meeting.
The Golden Gate bridge shut down for nearly three hours on Saturday night during strong offshore winds. Traffic halted except for access to the bridge from Waldo and Sausalito lateral closures. Sausalito Sergeant Everett Jennings ordered the stop after wind gusts near the north tower threatened vehicles. General Manager James E Rick ets defended the move, saying danger to motorists was overstated and that winds pushed the span no more than 24 inches without dangerous sway. No flood damage was reported in Novato today though the culvert beneath the railroad track was backing up, a blamed source of last year’s flood. Water flowed into the new North Marin Water District dam via Novato Creek, while Lena Dam remained fed only by rainfall.
A fresh Pacific storm battered northern and central California with rain and strong winds, while the South fringe extended to Monterey and Merced. Warnings urged up to 40 mph winds as power crews repaired Saturday's flood debris. Two duck hunters drowned when their boat capsized on San Pablo Bay amid ten foot waves.
The Edward Dathe family, living in Fairfax, lost their home at 17 Oak Yard to a Saturday night blaze. Red Cross aide was sought to locate shelter for the family, which includes a five year old daughter, as the Fairfax fire department had no information on the cause.
