A bus workers dispute over job classifications and union recognition threatens a Friday strike that could halt Marin to San Francisco service. About 5 000 residents rely on 78 morning Marin to San Francisco and 76 return trips each day, with peak hour service disrupted if talks fail.
Sal Santoro resigns from the San Rotel School system to take another position, with the board accepting the move. A transport policy dispute over pupil routes remains unresolved as officials debate which crossings and districts require school bus service. Belveron fire crews battled a small grass fire near Belveron Gardens late Monday night. The blaze, of undetermined origin, burned less than half an acre before firefighters halted it.
President Truman was briefed on the West Coast tuna fleet crisis as more than 400 boats prepared a Labor Day protest parade anchored at Sausalito. Rep Scudder urged review of rising imports from Japan and Perth, citing a 140 percent rise in frozen tuna over five years. Coast Guard permitted the parade to start near the Bay Bridge at 1 p.m. Monday, with a 1:30 p.m. mass meeting at Sailors Hall to discuss actions. Robert Croll reported minimal earnings after five days’ effort aboard the Robert Croll at Sausalito.
Marin supervisors have not yet chosen whether to adopt the Kroeger Report principal recommendation to hire a $9,000 a year county administrative officer. Elwood Ennis, who supervised the survey, said changes should be pursued but cautioned that success depends on the administrator’s qualifications and the plan’s implementation.

When they opened the box to signal all clear the message reversed to a general alarm prompting crowds to gather while crews attempted to quiet the horn.
Golden Gate bridge finance committee heard proposals to cut casual tolls to 25 cents and adjust other bridge fare options. Senator John F. McCarthy of San Rafael urged the 25 cent casual toll with a four trip book for $7 good for 80 days, while Marin leaders proposed varied 40 trip and 20 trip books, plus new one way and round trip rates. The committee weighed resistance from Greyhound and trucking groups, with no clear toll increase likely.
Bonnie Magruder a Fairfax lumber salesman was ordered by Superior Court Judge Jordan L Martinelli to sell all goods purchased with embezzled funds and repay Burris Lumber Co. from the proceeds. He pleaded guilty to listing 998 and is believed to have embezzled at least 11000. He used the stolen money for a house car and furniture.
Walter Sager of San Rafael will join West Point as one of two Camp Roberts men chosen for academy study. He recently graduated from Camp Roberts leadership school after enlisting in January and will enter West Point in March alongside William P. Klussman of Long Beach, the first Camp Roberts pair selected for the honor.
Mill Valley elementary schools will open September 11 with a record enrollment of 1,850, making the district Marin County’s largest. Superintendent Roy Laugesen cites growth around Strawberry and the appeal for families. Kindergarten exceeds 320, with recent expansions at Tamalpais Valley and Old Mill sites converting cafeterias to classrooms. A new seven-room Strawberry school and other upgrades await state funding and bids.
Ominous grey clouds over Marin bring more than a trace of rain with 0.03 inches reported yesterday and a repeat likely today and possibly tomorrow. Weather bureau officials admitted they cannot explain the early season precipitation.
