Thousands lined San Rafael streets for the Old San Rafael Fiesta Days parade concluding a weekend celebration. Mary Simontacchi and Janice Jansoon were crowned senioritas by Mayor Robert Austin. Two University of California Berkeley students were rescued from the San Francisco Bay near Angel Island after their dinghy capsized. Philip Oxman and Jean Marks were in the water about an hour before Coast Guard crews pulled them from the bay. They were treated for shock and exposure at Herrick Memorial Hospital in Berkeley.
Fire at 25 Palm Avenue, San Rafael, destroyed much of the second story with water damage totaling about 5000 dollars. Owner Oliver Lombardi not present. no injuries. Fire reported at 4 42 p.m. Fire Chief C M Johanson estimated damage and noted alight began eating into the roof.
Salvage from the hospital ship Benevolence washed ashore on Marin beaches including Tennessee Cove Muir Beach Bolinas and Stinson Beach. Sheriff Walter B Sellmer said all supplies bearing Navy labels must be returned to authorities and may be turned in at the courthouse or to deputies while crews continue searches for all persons missing amid foggy conditions.
Coast Guard Auxiliary No 14 of San Rafael aided in the rescue after a hospital ship sinking on Sunday. On training duty aboard Cutter 83397 it picked up 31 survivors and delivered them to Fort Mason then returned to recover hospital gear including 78 boxes of blood plasma. Passengers included Chet Seely John Forens Harry Black and others.
A three vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Greenbrae injured Eugene Ferrari 17 of San Anselmo who was rushed to Ross Hospital in shock. The San Anselmo laborer collided after the front car stopped suddenly, with Norman Saber and Frederick Boyes also involved.
Northwestern Pacific is operating under U. S. Army directives with no in person takeover at San Rafael. Army officers moved into Southern Pacific headquarters in San Francisco signaling seizure of seven California lines including Western Pacific Santa Fe Union Pacific Los Angeles Junction Railway and San Diego and Arizona Eastern as a nationwide strike was deterred.
Apprenticeship classes open at San Rafael evening high school with carpentry, mill and cabinet, electricity, and plumbing courses starting tonight. Auto mechanics begin Tuesday, with second plumbing and sheet metal classes on Thursday. The first adult class starts Thursday, a gardening course by Herman Hein meets Thursdays 7:30 to 9:30 in the greenhouse.
Mill Valley will cut a five foot high 150 pound birthday cake during its Golden Anniversary on September 23. The town, named after mill founder Joseph Eastland, celebrated its 1900 incorporation with an art exhibit, parade, pioneer introductions, outdoor dancing, a ball game, band concert, and free coffee.
Isaac Stern, famed violinist, presented a classical program in Forest Meadows as part of Marin Music Chest. With works by Beethoven Prokofieff Mozart Lalo and a Tschaikowsky encore he concluded the season with Alexander Zakin at the piano and Arthur Fiedler conducting.
Marin county officials clashed over voter registration policy at a Board of Supervisors meeting. County Clerk George Jones opposed roving deputy registrars while Leonard Thomas urged a night registration drive with up to 20 designated deputies, noting civic groups cooperate with the League of Women Voters to increase enrollment. The board hears plans for evening and postwork registrations to boost the Novembe r election list.
Santa Venetia residents petition the board asking the county to stop or regulate hillside excavations by J. D. OConner Construction on the Las Gallinas subdivision and by A Van Rotz in Santa Venetia. San Anselmo officers cited a San Francisco man, Herbert C Forchemer, after witnesses described a hit and run that struck a parked car owned by Leo Spilles at 1030 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Police said the incident occurred Saturday night.
The Corte Madera city council seeks county aid for reconstructing First Street. It offers 9,000 dollars while requesting 11,000 from the Board of Supervisors, with Supervisor William Fusselman arranging the meeting.
