Eight San Francisco teenagers spent a frigid night on Mt Tamalpais before state park rangers located them after about eight hours of being lost. They were unharmed and safe.
In Marin County Albert Barrows misses a county board session for a medical checkup ahead of war defense duties. A large crowd reads daily counts as eggs on a hill and a deer left on Miracle Mile sparks Humane Society action. Eight San Francisco teens were lost on Mt Tamalpais with two sunstrokes. rangers led a night rescue across Alpine Lake guiding them by a single match.
County fire department responded to two automobile fires on Highway 101 last night. A 1930 Chevrolet coupe belonging to Wm. Wright of Ft. Baker was a total loss after an ignition short started the blaze. An adjacent 1950 Plymouth owned by Howard Bradley of Marin City sustained slight damage from a battery cable short.
Marin supervisors tentatively approve a 1.9 million dollar County Welfare budget for 1950-51 led by Director Charles Ingram. A 30 cent tax rate increase is anticipated as part of the Prop 2 impact, with final approval set after Monday's review and a deadline of August 14.
A hit and run driver smashed the Roofing Service and Supply Co building at 201 Redhill Avenue in San Anselmo early today. A tan Dodge sedan left the scene after causing 50 foot skid marks and shattered glass. witnesses reported damage to the one room office and office equipment. Police said the car likely failed to make the Redhill and Sequoia intersection turn.
Bradley Ruef a 27 year old bell hop of 10 McCoy road San Rafael and George Mitchell a 24 year old salesman of 204 Terrace avenue San Rafael were treated at San Rafael General hospital after a 7 pm collision at Woodland and Lindaro avenues. Ruef suffered a broken collarbone and Mitchell knee bruises. police say Mitchell was blinded by the sun as he approached the intersection.
San Rafael city manager Ray Boege announced the yacht harbor dredging project will start within two weeks after dredging equipment arrives. The project, valued at 7800 dollars, will use dredged mud to fill the former bathhouse site leveled by last year’s fire at H C Little Burner Co.
Larkspur police report a theft of more than 1260 dollars in liquor from the newly opened Food Bank between 3 and 7 am yesterday. Thieves pried the back door with a jimmy bar. 20 cases of liquor were taken along with a whole lamb and a 25 pound beef chunk. No suspects named as officers pursue several clues.
Federal Judge George B. Harris revoked the $25,000 bail of CIO longshore chief Harry Bridges and ordered him jailed. The decision followed a government petition that Bridges’ recent conduct endangered U S security and criticized U S UN Korea intervention. Bridges was remanded to U S marshal custody.
North Korean forces press across the Nakton River in the northwest American defense box as Communists mass for a major assault on Pusan. A third major Red offensive forms around Taegu, while U S planes strike a large enemy armored column west of the Naktong. A U S light bomber pilot scores a direct hit on a 10 000 ton North Korean transport.
Wilfred E. Ross, 28, a former San Quentin inmate and barber, fled after stealing Burl Sloan's car. Officer Regnani fired two warning shots during a 65 mph chase. Sergeant Benepe fired a third warning shot as Ross fled. Ross was captured near Lincoln and Stevens and jailed on car theft charges.
A Marine Corps C-46 transport loaded with explosives crashed while attempting to land near Oklahoma City after delivering cargo from Cherry Point North Carolina to Moffett Field California. The six crew members escaped unharmed as fires and explosions drew thousands while authorities kept spectators back.
More than 2000 Marin county hunters prepared for the 1950 California deer season opening. Forecasters predicted a good hunt across 22 counties with half hour before sunrise start and 40 days of hunting. Some Mariners planned trips north to Sonoma Lake and Mendocino counties.
Marin supervisors will move quickly on civilian defense measures after finishing the new county budget. Supervisor William Fusselman said the board will form a coordinating body with state and local defense and disaster groups and assist unincorporated communities in building defense structures. The session, led by Red Cross disaster chair Pete Bliss, featured Charlotte Huggins outlining disaster preparedness and Red Cross roles, with attendees from Sausalito to Novato and officials including Capt. Milton Topper and Chief Camille Mello.
Thomas Gott 16 of Pt Reyes Station borrowed a friend’s scooter and crashed off a bridge embankment near Pt. Reyes Station. He suffered a broken hand and scalp laceration, with surgery planned after admission to Ross General Hospital. Owner Lawrence Hull 22 identified.
The town kicks off its Third Annual Fiesta with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Carmel Booth and VFW leader R. E. Pickering. Marin's C Company Marine Reserve is honored before leaving for Camp Pendleton. A kiddies parade and street parade are planned, plus a free tonight variety show at the fiesta grounds.
Deputy James Daley says two youths admitted to burglarizing the J E French Jr residence in San Rafael on May 13, stealing a television set and other items. Inspector A L Lamport reports a larger burglary ring involving twelve suspects, with David Monteverde named as the ring’s brains and previously paroled from San Quentin.
A smoking overheated clutch on a 1950 Plymouth owned by W. A. Slocum at 183 Scenic Avenue San Anselmo caused the San Rafael Fire Department to respond on Fourth Street between A and B streets at 10 37 this morning. No damage was reported.
