Some 142 Marines from Company C Marin County reserve units march away in gray uniforms under a gray sky. Veterans and newer troops face training at Camp Pendleton with uncertain futures, each driven by a quiet resolve to meet the challenge ahead.
Marin County residents gathered at the Kentfield armory for a Marine Company C departure to active duty. Families struggled to smile through tears as 400 people watched diverse Marin youth, including students and workers, bid farewell before buses transported them to training and deployment. Reverend Charles Williams delivered the closing message, reflecting a long-ago wartime mood.

Ovieto O Barker, 43, of San Anselmo, indicted by a federal grand jury in San Francisco on 25 counts of using the mails to defraud. He published California Tax Sales in San Anselmo, charging $15 yearly to lure buyers into supposedly tax delinquent land, with deeds never delivered or fraudulent. Deposits topped $800000 across 1946 to 1950, with one form letter bringing in $125000. If convicted, he faces up to five years per count and fines up to $1000 per count.

Arzelle McFarland of 29 Locke Lane Mill Valley woke at 3 am to find her sofa smoking. She pulled the burning furniture outside as it burst into flames. the Mill Valley Fire Department extinguished the blaze and the sofa was ruined.
Mayor Wedemeyer reports Larkspur seeks a civil defense director as council reviews a disaster ordinance. The city has not passed the ordinance yet but seeks volunteers to join a civil defense corps.
Building Inspector Lester Ryan reported the second heaviest month in the county’s history with 114 dwelling permits issued and 1 105 687 dollars in new construction started in July. Most activity was in suburban unincorporated areas, led by Belveron on Tiburon Highway.

At the Larkspur city council meeting last night engineer Oglesby warned the town may be surrounded if it does not monitor its relations with its sister city Corte. He cited rumors and expressed concern about potential encroachment from Corte.
