Don Davis writing a series advocating a No. airport in the county has faced late night phone harassment and public pressure. The column notes readers press him and the writer questions a remark about Rafael Marin IT and personal futures.
Carl Fordyce was installed as commander of Wilkins Post No. 27 at the San Rafael American Legion hall succeeding Dr. Louis L. Robinson. New officers include Al Re as first vice commander and George Simon as second vice, Edward Morris as finance officer and adjutant, Dick Miehling as chaplain, Cliff Langford as historian, and Chris Arata as sergeant at arms. Voiture 40 and 8 of Mill Valley installed the officers. Sarah Allen became Wilkins Auxiliary president with Betty Jo House, Elvira Regalia, Josephine Happersberger, and Irma Herkner on her staff. The San Anselmo auxiliary led the installation. dancing and refreshments followed.
San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge director Phil Davies will address the Sausalito Rotary club at the Alta Mira hotel at noontime tomorrow about the recent toll changes.
Marin county planners and the postwar committee explored Greenbrae as an airport site with an ambitious plan including airstrips hangers a yacht harbor and a county fairgrounds. Costs were high and bond funding never secured though the project highlighted major planning challenges and potential state and federal support.
The Sausalito school board approved a $362 802 budget for the year ending June 30 1951 up from $319 618 88 citing new teaching staff. Sixty two teachers will be employed with 16538 for a new bus and 5654 undistributed reserve. A $334 85 check from the Better Schools committee funds the school survey effort already joined by Marin City parents.
UPI reports seven U.S. Marine transports have disembarked most of the 1st Marine Division at a South Korean port. Marines are organizing gear and readying for front lines with equipment including some not yet used in Korea. Unloading described as in great shape at 3 a.m. local time. No speculation about future actions was allowed.
The war front report says Sherman tanks recapture lost ground east of Chinju near Pu san in a bloody battle as First Cavalry pulls from Kumchon. Northwestern anchor towns yield to enemy while U S First Marine Division lands. MacArthur declares enemy's last desperate all out assault. Air war sets record 500 sorties. allied naval forces assist but North Korea rejects aid as unnecessary.
Marin county citizens and local groups gathered at Kentfield to bid farewell to Company C Marines bound for active duty. Gifts included cigarettes, lighters, air mail stamps, and playing cards while Lions and Elks clubs provided doughnuts, coffee, and a pencil in the package. Radio KTIM prepared a segment to record the departure broadcasts at 12 30 and 5 30 p m.
Reed district trustees preliminarily call for a September 26 bond election to fund two six room cottage type schools at an estimated $150000 bond. The plan includes using Belvedere and Tiburon sites with grades split between existing schools. Budget for 1950-51 set at $47630 with $29500 for salaries and enrollment projected to rise from 136 to about 300 students by year end.
Tamalpais Union High School board authorized bidding for the Sir Francis Drake school in San Anselmo a 50 classroom facility to cost about 1.8 million. Plans drawn by Kump and Falk with budget actions including 749,945 for the coming year and a 382,000 salary bill for about 20 teachers. Assistant curriculum analyst Miss Vidella Martin to be hired at 6000 annually. a Chevrolet purchase for 1800 also approved.
Arthur John Millett 51 of Route 1 Box 117 Mill Valley died this morning while driving on Liberty Park Avenue apparently from a heart attack. He was identified by papers in his clothes as a former U S Navy civilian employee and hotel service purchasing agent. He is survived by his wife Mary. His body lies at Russell and Gooch mortuary.
A bulldozer operator Vern Dresser faces Fairfax police court cited for dumping 200 tons of dirt into Fairfax creek near Captain Henry Hemingway’s home. Judge Raymond Shone scheduled Aug 14 for a hearing on warrant necessity.
Sausalito city council authorized retroactive raises totaling 4800 for 22 employees effective July 1 1950. The schedule lifts senior staff to 3340 for chiefs and street foremen to 285 with other rates and raises. An August 15 budget review and an origin destination traffic survey were announced. The city also declined a new fishing float purchase and awarded a police car bid to J E French Company.
The Sausalito council discussed regulating the new downtown parking area opposite the bus depot. It endorsed a chamber of commerce plan to offer twenty monthly merchant spaces at five dollars each during a six month probation. Spaces would be reserved 7 am to 7 pm with no Sunday restrictions. The plan avoids $3,900 yearly meter costs, aided by expected $1,209 yearly revenue. John L. Sullivan supported. Mrs. Carl Spring opposed, questioning public access to hearings and city funds.
The state toll bridge authority studies six Marin landings for crossings. The TEA will present details to the District Army Engineers by August 9 on navigation clearances and lengths. The group favored the southern terminals near Point San Quentin and tidelands north of the ferry slip. Recommendations aim to benefit San Rafael and Marin.
W. P. Murray president of the Bank of San Rafael was named to a high post in the California Bankers Association. President J. C. Lipman of Union Bank & Trust Co. of Los Angeles announced Murray’s appointment to the association's committee on banking code.
Marin residents reported an unusually brilliant rainbow after noon, prompting calls to law enforcement and fire departments. A weather bureau expert explained the phenomenon as a solar corona caused by sunlight refracted through fine water particles, a rare high altitude event moving west from south of the San Francisco airport.
