Santa Venetia road project from Highway 101 to Mabryway will be improved with two inches of asphalt paving, widening from 16 to 20 feet with four foot shoulders. Bids open August 21. work to start next month and finish in 30 days at an estimated cost of $25,000.
San Rafael schools seek housing for three new teachers including two single women and a married woman with two daughters. The 49th Division in Northern California is not activated. Marin County's Company D, 579th Combat Engineers remains with the 49th. The 40th has a World War II history including Korea and the Pacific campaigns.
San Rafael issued 298 900 in building permits in July per building inspector Walter Hellwig, the highest July total in years. Residential projects comprised 193 050 of the value, including a 97 000 apartment and store at 1561 Fourth Street and a 31 000 apartment on Lincoln Way. Two large business permits followed: a 38 000 garage and car salesroom on Fourth Street and a 19 000 store on Francisco Boulevard.
