State Chamber Warns of Large Illinois Welfare Deficit
The Illinois State Chamber of Commerce warns of a potential welfare budget deficit driven by soaring public aid caseloads. Projections from April 1972 show nearly 828 thousand on public assistance, with medical costs rising and total expenditures up sharply since 1967. A deficit of 250 to 500 million dollars is possible, requiring cuts or tax increases unless federal aid or policy changes offset the shortfall.
