Illinois School District Reorganization Cuts to 1149 Units
Springfield reports most Illinois counties now have unit school districts with 422 unit districts and 566 elementary districts plus 16 high school districts after recent consolidations. Washington, Wayne, Hamilton, Johnson, and Massac counties lack unit districts though studies on Washington and Massac are underway. New consolidations in Jasper and Crawford counties reduce the total to 1,149 districts, a shift following 1947 legislation that left Illinois with 11,995 districts.
