Colorado's First Gold Discovery and Rush of 1870s
In a historical account based on Fonsett's Colorado, John Gregory and a prospector named Bax found gold on May 8, 160. Gregory Gulch near Central City and Black Hawk yielded about four dollars in gold from a dirt sample, sparking a stampede. Gregory hired five men. six Blake aided the operation, producing seven thousand seventy-two dollars in a week. The frontier gold strikes spread to Bates, Bobtail, Mammoth, Gunzel, Gurroughs, and Miners lodes, drawing over 15,000 men to Gregory, Russell, and tertiary Ruiched in 1880. Wealth grew rapidly before early erosion and attrition ended many fortunes as camps emptied.
