Washington May 5 AP The nationwide Lindbergh baby search echoed in the arrest of Gaston B Means on charges of obtaining $100000 by false representations that he could locate the child. He faced a $100000 bond and a preliminary hearing set for next Tuesday.
Senator Tydings of Maryland pressed President Hoover to express his views on prohibition. He accused Hoover of lacking courage and said some Republicans hinted at a wet plank in the platform. Hurley and Jahncke were cited as signaling possible modification, while Chairman Fess affirmed the party would stay dry.
Washington May 5 AP The War department appropriation was trimmed by about 24.56 million dollars below budget estimates reducing the present year's War Department bill by 88.978 million from earlier totals. The measure reached the House floor after an emancipated economy measure, with the package savings pared from 210 million to 42 million.

Washington officials said department instructions would be sent and the orders are expected to be obeyed.

St Louis on May 5 AP reports teachers and other members of the Board of Education have agreed to pay cuts to save the city 1,319,298. All payroll staff will work one unpaid day per month and receive no holiday pay. Teachers principals and executives face about a 10 percent cut, while janitors and other workers see roughly seven percent. Those earning under 1,200 yearly are exempt. The board’s finance committees said the reductions were accepted voluntarily.
The Senate finance committee adopted a 1921 income tax plan with a 4 percent rate on the first 4000 of taxable income and an 8 percent rate on amounts above, plus a top surtax of 55 percent for incomes over 1 million. A 1 percent sales tax proposal was rejected, as was a return to the 1918 schedule.
