International News Service reports Greece has entered a state of war with the Central Powers as government officials signal an imminent formal declaration. The move follows Greece breaking relations with powers carrying on war on Greek soil as the entente seeks to secure its interests.
Germany pursues a third attempt to gain a submarine base in the Caribbean. The move, announced from agton on June 29, targets a state department review as part of Berlin’s strategic aims.
Red Cross Fourth of July celebration plans a large feed with volunteers including Frank Enloe chairing the barbecue and a list of additional committee members. Loux Brothers will erect stands, Louis Ott will supply lumber, and about $500 has been raised to cover expenses. Thousands are expected to be fed with donations of cabbage, hams, pickles, coffee, eggs, sugar, potatoes, beets, and bread.

C C Brittingham of Eldon testified that a St Louis legislator approached him outside Jefferson City with a plan to hire labor groups to push bills for pay. Brittingham said the man claimed to work for a labor union and sought funding for labor legislation but Brittingham refused and noted others could have been approached.
Announcement last night said the colored Masonic lodges of the state will hold their annual convention in this city in August. Several hundred are expected to attend and the meetings will be at Lincoln Institute, which will be turned over for the purpose.
President Wilson stepped into the prohibition fight over the food bill to prevent a factional split and to favor a plan granting him authority to stop beer and wine making only if necessary. He told Senate leaders he supported halting distilled spirits but not immediate beer bans.
An audit of Lewis county records shows former circuit clerk James W. Barnes owes $5,520 and his bond is missing from file. Examiners note other county officers and ex-officials owe about $13,000, with several individuals required to repay sums and an overpayment recovered. The report also notes long outstanding warrants and a misstatement in the treasurer’s last quarterly balance.
A man who gave the name Kline, drunk on High street, elbowed several women and assaulted Officer Kraus. He was jailed overnight and will be brought to the police court this morning. He claimed Pennsylvania residence and admitted improper conduct.
A permanent local Red Cross chapter was formed last night in Dr. W. A. Clark's office with Dr. Clark as president and C. C. Carson, Mrs. J. B. Gantt, and A. A. Speer in officer roles. A fundraising committee for a July Fourth drive was named, to solicit citizens' contributions for aid beyond the big picnic.
Washington reports most basic goods will be banned from export to neutral nations supplying Germany. About sixty percent of the usual supply will be unavailable. The embargo proclamation was examined by the cabinet for three hours and may add more items to the barred export list.
Washington reports the Interstate Commerce Commission denied a 15 percent freight rate increase sought by U.S. railroads. Commissioner McChord dissented. The commission postponed rate charges and regulation to Oct 28 unless ordered otherwise, calling the hearing simplified and sweeping aside red tape. The move surprised observers amid strike threats last fall and claims of government support if labor demands were met.
Sheriff Anton Richter canceled his resignation from the Cole County draft exemptions board. He said he would work overtime to aid the board. Dr Mansur will join the board and has recommended W C Irwin and J G Dillard as additional members.
