The Brass Rail at 214 Madison St reported a burglary over the weekend. Betty Mantle, owner, found a rear door open and police said a loading dock door was forced. A heavy safe containing 179 in coins and receipts was moved to the loading dock by a dolly, with 10 silver dollars and four $1 bills also taken. The break-in occurred between 2 a.m. Sunday and 8:10 a.m. today.
Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert E. Seiler reported his black Continental stolen at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle, license plate 64, was found Saturday morning by Lafayette County authorities near the Capitol in front of the Supreme Court building, according to the Highway Patrol.
Mayor Mike Tate will resign in mid August to take a bank job in Brunswick. He will aid the city as an advisor during the remainder of his term, which ends in April 1977, as the Board of Aldermen appoints a successor.
A Joplin boy, Benny Arehart, 14, drowned after a raft tied to shore slipped loose at Noel Dam in Wayside Park. His brother Kent, 16, was rescued. both boys were pulled from the water. Two Lebanon teenagers Randy Carroll aged 19 and Eddie Mott aged 17 were arraigned on robbery charges connected to Friday’s Commerce Bank drive‑in heist. A 16‑year‑old is in juvenile custody. Bond set at 25,000 each. About 11,100 dollars was recovered at a nearby house after a customer identification led to arrests.
