Mob Chases Workers on Defense Job in Key West

Sheriff Berlin Sawyer vowed to deputize 100 men to guard workers on a 5400,008 defense housing project in Key West after a mob of hooded night riders terrorized carpenters. Two carpenters were beaten and others threatened in their barracks as labor agitator suspicions arose amid threats and a dynamite blast near the cottages. The Preu Company operator Edward Walker reported masked assailants with guns and clubs, asserting labor agitation motives. others linked the harassment to union labor pressures as work paused on the overseas highway connection to the mainland.

New York Subway Strike Threat Triggers Police Mobilization

Longtime Callaway resident Meador dies in Dallas at 86

John James Meador aged 86, longtime Callaway County resident, died last week in Dallas, Texas. He taught in Franklin County Virginia and Red Star school near Fulton. Born in Franklin, he moved to Callaway in 1830, later married Mary Jane Booth in 1884 and served as postmaster and justice of the peace at Toledo. He left Callaway for Dallas in 1900, then returned to Fulton before again moving to Dallas in 1912. Funeral services and burial were held in Dallas.
