Reds Drive ROK Forces Off Five Key Positions
Nine thousand Chinese Reds drove South Korean troops off five or more main-line positions on the East Central Korean front. The attack began Thursday night on the third anniversary of the war as Reds gained ground on the Pukhan sector. U N officers reported about 3 700 casualties in the western drive and Chinese reinforcements pressed on to two front positions. General Collins visited the Western Front with General Taylor to study future action if no armistice is reached.

Shortage Found in Nodaway County Treasurer Collector Accounts
State Auditor Haskell Halman reported a total shortage of 49047 dollars in the accounts of Harold L Wilson former Nodaway County treasurer and ex officio collector. The audit covers June 14 1951 to March 31 1959 and notes deceptive transactions obscuring when shortages occurred. It cites 46846 in the treasurer account 218 in the collector account and 17 in overcharged collector salary with a 3 percent commission charged for some taxes beyond the legal 2 percent limit. The report will go to Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Gene Thompson.

House Wrangles Over Defense Unit Revamping

A trans Atlantic plane and a motor car beat the stork in a race from Hamburg to a Boonville hospital. Mrs Hans Broderson flew from Hamburg to St Louis where her husband met her and they rushed to Boonville and a hospital. The child, a boy, was born about six hours after her arrival. The Cole County Home Economics Extension council voted to hold a joint trip to Hannibal on September 14 with about 40 members from five clubs attending the session in the Cole County library. Mrs Leslie Joyce of Jefferson City submitted trip plans and Mrs Oscar Dawson of Henley presides as council president. A 1954 program plan was distributed guiding clubs to pick one activity from foods, home management and clothing while new by-laws were adopted and the noon luncheon for County Achievement Day on July 18 at East School was approved.

Bank of Troy Robbery Sentencing in Tennessee

Two Girls Die In Kansas City Fire
In Kansas City Missouri two 16 year old soda fountain attendants died in a Parkview Drug Store blaze after a fireworks explosion. The victims Donna Heinrich of Independence and Darlene Braden of Kansas City were found near a stock room partition about 20 minutes after the blast. Gloria Beard a store employee witnessed their attempt to escape and urged them to flee before the fire spread.
