Bond allows higher General Assembly spending despite vetoes

Gov. Bond says he opposes large legislative expenditures yet signed two emergency appropriations that preserved near the lawmakers’ request, after vetoing about 900000 of the 7.2 million budget. The six week longer session this year pushed costs past seven million, with critics citing office renovations and higher staff salaries as the main drivers.

Legislative secretaries drawing unemployment

Legislative secretaries have begun collecting unemployment after the legislative session ended June 15. Dick Duncan, head of the local Employment Security office, says the new unemployment assistance act allows covered city county and state workers to qualify. House lists 163 secretaries with 8 remaining on payroll. Senate reports all 68 on payroll. Duncan notes it is nearly impossible to work and claim unemployment. false claims incur penalties and possible reemployment with penalties. Verification by payroll offices is required before payments.

Missouri unemployment declines to 6.6 percent in May

Missouri’s unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent in May from April, with 136,300 out of 2.1 million in the labor force unemployed. The division noted 11,800 fewer jobless and 16,300 more workers in May, aided by a concluded strike affecting about 10,000 workers and auto plant recalls.

Capps charged in Holts Summit store robbery

Forrest Allen Capps, 22, of 905 Clark Ave, arrested by Callaway County sheriff on breaking and entering and theft over $50 for the Sunday morning Pic-n-Pay robbery. Two others sought. owner reported over $700 in cash and merchandise taken. arraignment set for Wednesday afternoon. Missouri Power & Light rate hearings planned in Jefferson City and Mexico on July 11 and July 10 with revenue impacts of $3.5 million and about $600,000 respectively.
