The Council of National Defense will soon begin registering women nationwide. They will answer questions on training education and physical condition and may pledge to perform government service during the war.
An American destroyer responded to a wireless signal from a British merchantman attacked by a submarine near a British base. The ship arrived to find wreckage and missing crew members, with reports of an abandonment and casualties.
Washington reports June 25 that the government plans measures to conserve oil and gasoline supplies as wartime demands grow.
Washington reports the Red Cross has reached its hundred million dollar goal as final tallies come in. Subscriptions in the prior day total over eighteen million across nearly a thousand cities. Miss Kathrine Stinson, the third woman aviator, closed the campaign by delivering a satchel of Red Cross contributions to Secretary McAdoo after her cross country flight.
Twelve suffragists were arrested after a late evening attempt to demonstrate in front of the White House. They were booked on charges of violating the law and order code and will be arraigned in police court Wednesday. Suffrage leaders maintain the arrests will not alter the program.

Steve Kallaris owner of the Jefferson Candy Kitchen on High street accused E. Kemper a railroad worker after an argument over a joke. The two men clashed outside the shop with Kallaris filing charges and Kemper released on own recognizance as a judge set a hearing.
National League games saw Brooklyn 4 over Boston 3 after a 2 2 tie. New York 0 and Philadelphia 2. American League results had Philadelphia 0 over New York 5 to 1 7. Washington 4 over Boston 3 0. St Louis 6 and Cleveland 9.
Citizens urge passage of a garbage collection measure at the next council meeting. Councilman Henry Blank objects to the $1,000 cost for wagons, arguing the city cannot afford it, while supporters insist the move protects public health and may start with one or two metal wagons.
Washington June 25 The War Department has received Pershing reports on preparations for the American army to France. The base will be south of St. Quentin and troop movement will be well under way by September 1.
A city wide Red Cross Fourth of July celebration is planned with McClung Park amusements and a barbecue. Mayor Frank Chapman says funds from the picnic will go to the National Red Cross and expects at least $1,000 to cover costs with the rest boosting the fund. An ordinance authorizes issuing 34000 in refunding bonds to retire the 1907 bonds. The Mercantile Trust Co of St Louis bought the issue for a 500 commission. The plan requires 4000 yearly to the sinking fund plus 4 percent interest.
The council approved sidewalks on Ashley street in front of Hy Schmidt Ed Stine H D Chambers Caroline Schwab and Thos G Cooper between Jefferson and Madison. Additional ordinances require sidewalks on Lafayette street in front of properties owned by Ide Belch Lula Keller and others.
Jefferson City residents appeared before the grand jury amid an inquiry into bribery linked to a chiropractors licensing bill. Dr Guy RB Mitchell of Branson testified about a $1000 offer to withdraw opposition, while Francis M Kinder of Poplar Bluff said a St Louis legislator offered $800 if the bill passed. Additional witnesses related to optometry and chiropractic interests were summoned.
An unknown woman, stopped with friends in Washington park, was struck by an automobile driven by Glenn Englebrecht on High street near Adams street. She stepped into the car’s path and was knocked several feet, taken to an address in Washington park with only minor bruises reported.
Washington June 25 Proponents of the prohibition amendment were confident the Senate would ratify the house action and keep the radical prohibition in the food bill. The Senate has repeatedly supported prohibition though no final action on the bill was taken. The matter will be considered tomorrow by the sub committee amid opposition over financial economy concerns.
Gus Moeller received the news from Pueblo Colorado announcing the death of his wife Henry Moeller known as Hink Hink Moeller a longtime printer. He was 55 when he died after years in a home near Colorado Springs and a period in a sanitarium. His body will be brought here for burial with funeral expected Thursday.
Noah Branner and Kr Bolfing of Osage City will wed this morning at the home of Pastor Stoerker of the Evangelical church. The ceremony will be performed by the pastor.
