Mayor urges Senate pass taxing measures

Jefferson City Mayor urges the State Senate to adopt two tax bills that would introduce earnings and sales taxes for cities with populations around 40,000. The earnings tax could be one half of one percent or one percent, while the sales tax would require a city to set up its own collection system. The mayor argued the measures could yield revenue to fund city needs without adding statewide administrative burdens, and urged residents to study both options before adjournment. He noted the bills aim to relieve financial pressure on municipalities and attract business, though impact on city competition remains debated.
