City housing list to guide public works planning

Truman Aims to Set Precedent on Papers and Gifts

Former President Harry S Truman told a House subcommittee he hopes to set a precedent requiring the president to turn over all official papers and gifts. He valued the material at roughly 21 million dollars to be turned over to the government next month and argued the items would not have become his property if not for the presidency.

Holiday Could Bring Wreck Every 20 Miles

The National Safety Council warned Fourth of July travel could bring a wreck every 20 miles on America’s 3.4 million miles of roads unless drivers exercise extra caution during the four day holiday. About 45 million motor vehicles were expected on streets and highways, averaging 33 vehicles per mile if all were on the road at once, as 158 national groups back a Safe Independence Day campaign.

Southwestern Bell Seeks Large Stock Debentures Issue

Southwestern Bell Telephone Co asked the state authority to issue and sell 100 million dollars of 35 year debentures to repay construction loans advanced by American Telephone and Telegraph Co. Bell cited 153.58 million spent on construction from 1956 to 1959 and indicated plans to seek an additional 374.66 million in securities to cover further construction costs.

Senator Protests Hooper Case Bill in Senate

Senator Purtell denounced a $1500 doctor bill for services during and after Benny Hooper Jr.’s rescue from a Manorville well. He urged nationwide fundraising to cover the charge, calling it a pound of flesh. Pastore questioned the bill’s validity and suggested Legal Aid guidance. Thye praised the rescuer Sam Woodson over the doctor’s charge.

Ben Koester Sells Venerable 1921 Model T Ford

Ben Koester sold his 1921 Model T Ford touring car after owning it since manufacture. The vehicle stayed in his family from 1921 until last week, when a buyer paid 585 dollars with wheels and drove off after minor servicing. Koester had kept the car in a basement garage since 1926 with only about 1,000 miles on the odometer, noting its storied history and aging upholstery from rat damage.
