Jefferson City councilmembers moved through a light agenda and discussed a proposed anti scavenger ordinance to curb trash picking during spring cleanup. Fire hydrant study and sewer easement requests were also reviewed along with low level salary adjustments for Civil Defense.
The State Highway Commission filed condemnation papers against nine Cole County landowners in circuit court to obtain land for a seven mile stretch of US 54 from Route E at Bravite to near the Miller County line. A hearing is set for 9 a.m. July 12 in the circuit courtroom to discuss the issue. If the commission cannot reach agreement on price, the court will decide under eminent domain.

A federal judge blocked Democratic party reform provisions that would have guaranteed black, women and youth presence in delegates and restricted reliance on pre year party officials. The ruling leaves several challenges unresolved as the DNC plans an appeal three weeks before the national convention.
State Rep. R J King announced he is cutting back his bid for governor citing a $816,000 deficit. He will close campaign offices and release staff while not officially withdrawing, with headquarters in Jefferson City likely to follow. A spokesman said the campaign has lacked the necessary funds after more than 17 months of operation.
King plans limited gubernatorial bid after weekend talks with advisers about funding ads and lack of supporter response. He cites 20 years in the legislature as his qualification and notes deser tion of early backers. The move may boost Kit Bond and Gene McNary prospects.
Two area students sue in St Louis County Circuit Court to block a state law that would provide free textbooks to private and parochial schools and public schools. They argue it violates the First Amendment and Missouri Constitution provisions on separation of church and state. Named plaintiffs are Robert W Poster of Ladue and James M Hornback of Southwest High School. The law, set to take effect August 13, would use state school book funds for all pupils in elementary and secondary schools.
Cole County Court endorses a constitutional amendment to open governmental meetings records and votes to the public. Judge Tony Hiesberger says the court supports open business for any citizen to attend. Citizens Lobby aims to collect 92,000 signatures for the initiative to place the measure on November ballot.
At least three people were killed in northern Missouri traffic accidents. Larry Hall 21 of Des Moines Iowa died when his car failed to negotiate a curve near Chillicothe. A Kirksville couple Sheril Darnielle and Naomi Darnielle both 32 died in a two car collision near Lancaster. A passenger David Kantrovitz 28 Ballwin Missouri was critically injured and driver Robert White 17 Ottumwa Iowa also suffered critical injuries. The Great River Council Boy Scouts of America will honor Eagle Scouts at 3:30 PM June 25 at Lincoln University Center with many named Eagle Scouts from Jefferson City and area communities. The event honors the Robert N Hunter class of Eagle Scouts and Distinguished Eagle Award recipient Hunter a Missouri Highway Department official. Dr James N Freeman Lincoln University chairs event. public invitations require reservations through the Great Rivers Council.
