Second draft plans outlined for fall deployment

Washington reports rapid war preparations with a second draft of about 625 000 men planned within months of the first. Pershing's division to be reinforced, New York and Illinois guardsmen to go first, and a total calling possibly reaching 1 625 000 by year end.

Attack on Rega Raids Resume with Bomb Drops

German sea planes again raided the Russian base on the Gulf of Rega near Petrograd dropping forty one bombs on warships and shore defenses. The ongoing raids suggest a major sea battle looms. A son was born to Mr and Mrs P L Hutchinson yesterday.

U boats watching for army transports

Washington reports Germany has concentrated the largest sub marine fleet around the British Isles and France as American troops prepare for France. Officials credit a lull in sinkings to German repairs and returning subs to base while yards build more large boats. At current rates Germany could sink about 9 million tons of shipping in a year.

George English Killed by Engine Near the Station

George English, a well known insurance man, was killed after stepping between rails near the depot when a switch engine struck him. He lost both legs and died three hours later at St Mary’s hospital, after heroic attempts to save him and last requests for his parents.

Judge Suffering Suffered Nods Dismisses Jury and Adjournes Court

Circuit Judge Slate, ill with a strawberry rash, discharged the petit jury and adjourned the circuit court citing health and slow readiness of attorneys. He ordered special juries in the future and noted cases Flynn vs Transit Co and others. Several judgments and alimony awards were entered, and paroles were discharged.

Board Eyes Central School Move to Dunklin Street

The school board plans moving Central School to the Winston lot on Dunklin Street between Monroe and Adams, selling the Miller and Monroe corner lot, to better serve south city residents. If approved, Frank Miller would design the new Central building at 5 percent of the cost, with site relocation decision pending.

New York Suspect Enticed Girls From His Shop Cellar

Alfred Cocchi, tied to the Ruth Cruger case, lured young girls into the cellar of his motorcycle shop. A 16 year old girl, Fellipa Marvial, narrowly escaped an assault when her mother intervened. The attempt occurred last September and was relayed to Police Commissioner Wood.

McKinley Delegates Tendered a Banquet

Ray Palmblade returned from a Mexico inspection tour with Vice-President Chubbuck and T. B. Macauley. The group traveled by auto from here to Fulton then to Mexico and were hosted by the Commercial Club of Mexico. Macauley noted possible Keokuk to Jefferson City power line extensions and cheaper local electricity, while Palmblade and Chubbuck spoke on war matters and Macauley’s remarks pleased the audience.

Mitchell says he refused $1000 to drop chiropractic bill

Dr B Mitchell of Taney county testified today that a Jefferson City lawyer pressed him to withdraw opposition to a bill licensing chiropractors. He rejected the offer and defended his stand. The report also notes ties with the chiropractors and a possible reconsideration offer for 250 and 750 contingent on passage.
