Government mediators work to avert a Tuesday walkout by TWA flight engineers. Secretaries of labor, airline negotiators, and AFL-CIO unions seek a settlement over cockpit jobs as Kennedy warns against striking.
Ford II said a strike idling 50,000 Ford workers should settle soon, but the company will not meet union demands at the Cleveland stamping plant. He spoke of running plants without union control and expressed optimism about business relations with the Kennedy administration.

An East Berlin guard was killed when comrades fired from a pillbox as four of thirteen East Germans attempted to escape through a 90 foot tunnel under the wall. West Berlin students dug the tunnel and guided two women and two boys to a vacant building before guards opened fire.
At the United Nations the Soviet Union accused Britain of pursuing a racist Rhodesian policy as the Asian African bloc pushed a resolution demanding Britain scrap Southern Rhodesia's constitution. Morozov urged immediate independence and federation dissolution, warning of apartheid-like rule if policy continued. Ghana sponsor Quaison-Lacky introduced the resolution with 19 sponsors. Jordan withdrew.
Pickets in blazing heat protested outside the Highway Department building and the state capital in St Louis. They identified themselves with the Eastern Missouri Laborers District Council AFL-CIO seeking demolition rate pay on I-55 right of way projects.

The Coast Guard reported a private yacht sighting a submarine named USS Argonaut sinking about eight miles off Farnham Rock between Scituate and Plymouth. The Navy later said no Atlantic Fleet submarine was in the area and Argonaut was in port at Norfolk, Virginia.
Ozark Air lines offered to settle unresolved issues by binding arbitration after 14 months of talks. President Joseph H. Fitzgerald sent a telegram to Air Lines Pilots Association urging Mediation Board selected arbitrator to prevent a midnight Friday strike. The union, representing 180 pilots, had complained the airline refused to bargain in good faith as Ozark serves Central Missouri with stops in Columbia and Jefferson City.
The Leschen Wire Rope Co. will relocate from 2727 Hamilton Ave in St. Louis to St. Joseph, Missouri, after operating since 1857. The move, effective July 1, comes after its April 1 purchase by Wire Rope Corp. of America and consolidation of operations in St. Joseph. About 120 St. Louis employees will be affected while 10 supervisory staff move. a North Broadway warehouse will hire three to four workers.
National League action saw Los Angeles beat St Louis 1 to 0 in a pitchers duel. Cincinnati won 6-4 while Pittsburgh defeated Milwaukee 5-2 and New York topped them 7-1 in scheduled games. American League also featured Minnesota 9 over Kansas City 4 in the lone matchup.

Dana Moore a 3 year old of Sedalia Missouri died after a two day battle from injuries allegedly inflicted by her mother Billie Joe Moore 27. A warrant charging mistreatment of a minor was served and a second degree murder charge prepared against the mother. Dana died in an iron lung at Bothwell Hospital from brain hemorrhage and internal injuries including a skull bruise perforated intestine and extensive body bruising.
Six men pleaded innocent to federal indictments charging mail and wire fraud in the operation of the old Arizona Savings and Loan Association. Defendants include W. Kanan and George M. Hill of Phoenix and Martin Breitenbach Hull of Phoenix. James F. Byrne of Scottsdale. Donald R. Elbel and R. E. Wolfe of Grandview, Missouri. They were given until Sept 10 to file motions in U S District Court.

Cole County grand jury is to reconvene at 9 a.m. to investigate the case of a former Jefferson City couple charged with illegally voting absentee ballots. Three witnesses are summoned with records on Gardner voting. 22 more connected persons also called. Foreman Paul Adams said the panel will decide promptly on the Gardner matter and related charges against Judith Deel Vieth.
The Missouri Society of Professional Engineers schedules its 26th annual meeting June 21 to 23 in Kansas City at the President Hotel with over 300 engineers expected. A Saturday manpower conference, sponsored with the President's Office of Emergency Planning, will address economy of skills and feature federal and industry speakers.
