Cole County Republicans hold annual barbecue in Jefferson City

The Cole County Republican Barbecue begins at 3 p.m. at Rip’s Mor-E-60 Lodge Edge with Gov. Bond and other officials serving. Attendees can buy tickets for 3 dollars for adults and 1.25 for children under 12. Local Republicans, including Mildred Huff Man and Albert Kemp, will also serve.

Parochaid election draws second suit over aid amendment

A second lawsuit challenges the August 3 ballot question on limited state aid to parochial students. Rev. Dr. Hugh Wamble argues the title misleads voters by implying benefits for public school students and contends the measure is unconstitutional due to dual purposes. In Kansas, deputies seized about 100 marijuana plants in Cherokee County near Treece, burning them in Columbus with no arrests reported.

Commission backs Prost bid for downtown parking garage work

The city Parking Authority favors Prost Construction Company’s 12 400 bid to remove the worn surface on the third level of the parking garage, with a 900 alternate bid for drain lowering approved as a possible future task. The vote also considers relocating city employees to a 226 E High St lot behind Tolson Drug Store to improve downtown parking and increase revenue, while delaying decisions on adding new surface levels and other lot changes.

Park Board Eyes Land Purchase for Nine Hole Golf Course

Jefferson City Park Board discusses acquiring a tract between US 50 and Rainbow Drive adjoining Binder Park. Owners donate 20 acres. 40 acres bought. Matching funds could total 76,000 from state agencies, leaving 26,000 to be paid. Plan includes a nine hole par three course with lighting. Also reports NCAA funded program for youth ages 10 to 16 from June 21 to July 23 with activities and meals.
