Breaks Losing Streak Stock Market Bounces Back

The stock market ended a four session slide with a strong advance on Friday as heavy trading and big buy orders from investment funds lifted the AP 60 stock average to 214.10 and the Dow to 578.18. The gain followed the May 28 plunge, the worst since 1929, and included notable rises in IBM and other key groups while gold stocks fell.

Death of Capital Cilion driver in highway crash near city

Elmer T. Hart a 48 year old Jefferson City carpenter died when his 1958 pickup left Highway 54 near the city limits and struck a rock bluff at 2:35 p.m. His wife and parents survive. Hart was a World War II veteran and a St. Peter's Cathedral member. A separate Cola Co truck driven by John Luebbert escaped injury after brake failure sent it down an embankment on Industrial Ave. A second two car crash on Industrial Drive injured Sullivan Mahon and Lawrence Moeller.

Grand Jury Subpoenas 22 More Witnesses in Gardners Case

Twenty two witnesses were subpoenaed by Circuit Judge Sam C Blair for the Cole county grand jury in a voting case involving Hector Gardners. Most names are election judges or officials connected to the Gardners here. The Gardners face misdemeanor charges for voting absentee while not residents of Jefferson City.

Convict Breaks Away From Deputy At Rolla Jail

Robert Ronald Willis a 27 year old former Newburg resident broke from a deputy sheriff at Rolla County jail while being locked in an outside cell door. Willis serving a 10 year term for burglary and larceny fled last December from Church Farm and was at large five months before recapture. He is now again missing with a wide manhunt by Highway Patrol and Pulaski County authorities.

Pilots Set Strike Deadline Against Ozark Airlines

The Airlines Pilots Association notified the National Mediation Board of a strike deadline at midnight June 22 against Ozark Airlines after 14 months of failed contract talks. Convicted Killer Sentenced to Death in Missouri

Ruben Anderson, 21, of St. Louis, was sentenced to death for the murder of Anthony Schrader, a 72 year old religious articles salesman. An all male jury found him guilty of murder in the first degree after deliberating about an hour and 15 minutes. Anderson and two companions plotted the killing for a week.
