President Wilson demanded rapid action on the Lever food bill, stating it must become law before July 1. He warned that delaying would risk higher prices as harvesting starts and speculators move to push costs upward. The stance was announced today in Washington.
Paris June 15 Black Jack Pershing laid a wreath on La Fayette's grave in a ceremony described as the most impressive of his stay. Pershing and his staff resumed routine work and he was hosted by General Joffre. French crowds lionize him as Y M C A branches prepare comforts for U S troops.
The initial Liberty Loan bond trading on the New York Stock Exchange began at noon in New York. A $10,000 lot sold at par and 1-50th, the next $250,000 at par, and a $25,000 lot at 99 and 49-50s.
London reports further portions of the Hindenberg line captured northwest of Bullecourt. German forces suffered heavy casualties as the advance continued tonight.
At yesterday’s school board meeting Miller & Chaffee were ordered to draw plans for a replacement of the old Central building. Bond issue support was reported at about 11 to 1 after canvassing returns. Superintendent Baker’s report shows 2,131 enrolled this month, up 125 from last year. Textbook costs averaged 174 percent cents per pupil in grades and 39 cents in the high school. Free textbooks total $441.70. A coal contract for 500 tons was let to J. C. Johnson at $4.75 per ton.
Upon the death of Abe Heim his heirs left $500 to the Provi dent association. The funds were given to officers and yesterday they purchased a $500 Liberty Bond through First National bank. The bond can be redeemed at its face value with accrued interest and may not be cashed until next winter.
Washington reports a pledge from the United Mine Workers and mine operators promising one billion tons of coal production for the coming year. John P. White asserts free workers can cover the nation with coal and raise output from 600 million to one billion tons. The Council of National Defense endorsement signals labor support for President Wilson with no strike fears.
A. L. Luedke working with Missouri and federal highway officials studied routes for a state road through Cole county and adjacent areas. The plan includes bridging Osage and Gasconade rivers with state and federal funds and may begin construction within thirty days in Cole county.

Prison welfare board approved an inmate led entertainment on June 22 to raise funds for a motor ambulance for the National Guard of Missouri. Warden Painter said the show aims to surpass last winter’s Legislature benefit.

In Missouri the doodle case moves forward as two grand jury warrants issue in St. Louis. A. T. Dumm of Jefferson City says C. L. Easton of the Missouri Chiropractic Association asked him to draft a bill licensing chiropractors and offered a fee. Dumm refused noting his duties as a legislator and lawyer are separate and that he opposed licensing chiropractors. Easton then hired W. C. Irwin to draft and lobby the bill. Easton admits asking Dumm to prepare the measure but says Dumm would not back it.
Washington reports that about three billion dollars in liberty loan subscriptions have been pledged by roughly three million people including men women and children. The treasury department estimates the final total will be well over the amount as returns come in on Monday, marking an unusually successful public loan drive.
The Missouri Pacific payroll for May totals 43 991 dollars, as reported by general agent W J Kaiser. The sum exceeds last month by about 5000 and marks the largest Jefferson City payout in years. Rising business leads to more hires and higher wages for local workers.
Mrs J B Palm with R W Woodbury and wives departed yesterday for Lincoln Nebraska to join Mr Palm who runs the Lindell hotel. The Madison hotel transfer completed with new proprietor W R Bakey in charge. The party planned to reach Lincoln by tonight after moving by land with two autos and personal baggage.
Harvey Williams a Emporia blacksmith must remain with his wife in all street travel or face three months in jail. The police judge Rev J H J Rice sentenced him after a disorderly conduct conviction and parole. He may visit his shop and home but nowhere else without his wife.
National League games saw Boston 6 at Chicago 3 and Philadelphia 12 over Cincinnati 8 with St Louis 3 and Brooklyn 2. American League results include Chicago 8 at Boston 0, Detroit 4 over Jane 3, St Louis 1, New York 5 over Cleveland 2, and Philadelphia 3.

International News reports Emma Goldman and Berkman were placed under arrest in New York on June 15 for conspiring to impede the draft. Police seized the office of the anarchist publication Mother Earth and found papers listing members nationwide. Names will be checked to determine who will be called upon to show cards.
