Compromise Labor Bill Sparks Republicans in Senate Fight

Washington June 14 AP The administration's compromise labor bill drew sharp GOP objections as Senate adjournment remained uncertain. Democrats hoped for a quick end with a midweek return while housing credits were under study and Tugwell's confirmation narrowed disagreements. The House pressed ahead with misc legislation including a Morgenthau request to curb bootleg bottle production.

Police Officers Match Marksmen in Target Practice

Russell Tate issued a challenge to police department members to prove pistol skills. Officers Dave Jobe Joe Schrader and Henry Durham accepted and fired 18 shots each. Jobe scored 53 Schrader 40 Durham 31 and Tate 7.

Girl 13 Identifies Negro Attacker in Fatal Arkansas case

Marie Huff, 13, testified in Sebastian County circuit court that O'Brien Atchison killed her grandmother Mrs. L. R. Stansberry, 80, on March 24 and attacked her mother. Prosecutor Harrell Harper urged the jury to condemn or acquit, while unrelated notes mention Captain Cook and a Venus transit observation.

Anniversary speaker to mark church founding in Jefferson City

The Rev. Cieland B. McAfee of New York, secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church and noted religious leader, will speak at Sunday services commemorating the 100th anniversary of the church in Jefferson City. McAfee is a direct descendant of the first Presbyterian pastor here, Rev. Robert L. McAfee, with many local families listed among attendees and supporters across Missouri and nearby states.

Debt installment payments halted by European nations

European debtor states declared a moratorium on war debt to the United States with only Finland offering a remittance of 166,538 dollars. Italy, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Estonia and Latvia indicated defaults, joining Britain, France, Belgium and Czechoslovakia already in default. The Johnson Act threatens further financial restrictions if default continues, with Yugoslavia and Lithuania to respond by tomorrow’s close.

Defense Plea to High Court in Kelley Case
