Cole County Clerk Montle Christian says out county voter registration may start around September 15 as precinct designations near completion. He aims for 34 precincts with 14 out county and 20 in-city and notes registration may begin sooner but prefers waiting for full setup.
A 13 year old Charleston boy, Scott Emanuel Hayes, was killed when a motorcycle collided head on with a pickup driven by Leonard H. Buschmann near Vienna on Flat Top School Road. His 12 year old companion, Kyle Richard Malone, was seriously injured and later moved to University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia. The crash occurred after the motorcycle rounded a Sharp curve and struck the pickup. Two Holts Summit youths suffered minor injuries when their car overturned on Frog Hollow Road in Cole County.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles meets at Aerie 2693 Lodge Home 1411 Missouri Blvd Friday and Saturday for its 75th annual state convention. Programs include Jimmy Durante Children's Fund Cancer Fund and Max Baer Heart Fund with a Truman named project in La Palma Panama. Missouri is named a Beil Ringer State with two new Aeries in Caruthersville and West Plains.
The Missouri Public Service Commission ordered the Norfolk and Western Railway Co to install bell and flashing light signals at the Lindell Street crossing in Hannibal. Side light facing Patchen Street will protect traffic turning onto Lindell. Commission hearings were May 17 after an May 3 investigation. Estimated install cost 20192 dollars with yearly maintenance of 608.4. City covers 90 percent from state fund, railroad pays 10 percent and all maintenance. Installation deadline set for July 1, 1974.
Chesebrough-Ponds Inc will lay off about 100 employees for roughly three weeks starting Monday due to a slight overstaffing last year. Ted Marriott, the personnel manager, says this is the second layoff in seven years, the first occurring in 1970 during inventory. The workers span all three shifts.
Missouri State Park Board cancels all fee requirements for the Missouri Camper Award Program. James L. Wilson, state parks director, announced the move to encourage more visitors and participation by individuals, families, and non profit youth groups who camp at five state parks in a year. Previously applicants paid 5 for families, 3 for individuals, and 1 per person in non profit youth groups.
Skylab astronauts used earth resources sensors on a pass over Cape Kennedy to gauge the influence of Walt Disney World on the growing region. Clouds hampered the broader Midwest and Rockies surveys while Florida’s Brevard County remained the primary target for data collection.
Work to widen U S 54 from the Cole County line to east of Eldon to four lanes begins in July. The $3.8 million project, bid last month, should finish by fall 1975. The plan includes pavement upgrades, bypass routes, bridges, culverts, grading, and resurfacing with only minor traffic disruption expected.
Gov. Bond signed a bill raising the minimum starting pay for probation and parole officers from 7000 to 9000. The move affects 191 workers, and Missouri will add 41 parole staff including 25 new officers. The governor questioned the merit system method used and ordered a study on merit salaries.
A Boone County jury trial was averted when Virginia Crater and William Garrison settled the odometer tampering fraud case. Crater received 1750 by draft from Garrison Motors after filing in Cole County and changing venue to Boone County. Crater had sought 500 in punitive damages and 10000 for herself.
Perry Joseph Wimmer, 21, of Portland, drowned Tuesday night while swimming the Auxville River near the Mo 94 bridge about three miles east of Mokane. The Callaway County coroner ruled accidental drowning. witnesses said he attempted to swim to the river bank and clearing. The body was recovered around 10 p.m. near the southwest bank with efforts by the Boat Commission and Sheriff’s Office.
The Rev Arthur Hughes associate pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church attended the third annual Bootheel Involvement Conference in Lilbourn with Jeffery Morse and Miss Jeen Harrison. They joined about 30 participants to paint community centers in North Wardell and Homestown repair homes and porches and improve recreation areas. The group also toured Pemiscot County Jail and visited migrant worker homes.
Missouri air officials say St. Louis must reduce automobile traffic to meet 1975 federal air quality standards. EPA in Kansas City warned the St. Louis area to adopt traffic controls. local officials caution the data may need revision and note car pooling and mass transit as possible solutions.
In Hannibal Missouri area residents oppose a Palmyra site for 30 40 mobile homes meant to aid Mississippi River flood victims. Federal planner John Chulick said reluctance to drive 12 miles could push development and force a new Hannibal site, delaying at least three weeks. State funds back the Palmyra area project with HUD ownership.
