At 12:15 a.m. an explosion and blaze at the American Sugar Refining Company plant in New York City left three known dead and up to fifty buried as flames shot hundreds of feet high. About 500 workers were inside, many with clothing burned away, as authorities rushed police reserves to manage crowds and locate missing relatives.
The Steel Corporation and other major businesses declared dividends for Red Cross relief totaling 204694 dollars. International News Service reports that several large firms matched the Steel Corporation’s generosity in wartime charitable support.
Elks will celebrate Flag Day this evening at the new capitol beginning at 8 o'clock. Ceremonies will be staged at the depot and the mansion yard with flags to be unfurled in both locations.
Civic and mill officials to march downtown shortly after 6 PM with police leading a parade forming on Monroe and Main streets.
A civic parade with bands schools and veterans will move east on Main to Adams then Water to the Missouri Pacific station where a large flag purchased by a company employee will be raised. Tom Dumm will speak and twenty one guns will fire. The parade continues to Water street then to the governor’s mansion for another flag unfurling on a new 60 foot staff. Governor Gardner and Attorney General McAllister lead to the capitol for ceremonies.
The senate adopted the conference report on the urgent deficiency bill without a dissenting vote. The $3.34 billion measure includes a $750 million merchant marine allocation and now goes to the president for approval.
Attorney General McAllister moves to verify claims that a Missouri legislator sought a 1000 dollar bribe from a Chiropractic Association representative to influence the chiropractors licensing bill. Four witnesses, including C L Easton, are to be examined by the St. Louis grand jury amid a Jefferson City inquiry into alleged improper lobbying.
A lively amateur benefit show titled Society Circus wowed a big crowd at the Jefferson last night. Younger members staged clever acts devised by David Avonberg with Miss Phyllis Barry and Eph Towles drawing strong cheers in a color filled program for the Red Cross unit of the local U D C society.
London reports say eighty to ninety killed and over one hundred injured in a German air raid. Sir Derby announced forty nine sons killed and two hundred injured in the east end when the raid struck. many bombs fell rapidly and British machines pursued the Germans amid uncertain results.
