A landslide at a 25 foot wall of an expressway cut in Williamsburg Brooklyn killed six children aged 5 to 10 and injured one boy. Police and fire rescuers worked for nearly three hours as neighbors had warned of danger from the construction area.
The Army ordered the execution of Pvt Richard A Hagelberger for the murder of two German civilians, reversing a delay. Pvt John F Vigneault, his partner, received a commuted sentence and now serves 55 years. Vigneault fired the fatal shots during separate trials. Hagelberger was described as the dominant personality in the killings. The two men had killed two civilians who offered a ride and then stole their car.
Ben Porter park board secretary announced registration for the 12 to 17 year old summer recreation program. Registration runs all day Friday and until noon Saturday to plan activities and line up instructors at Washington Park. Centers for ages 6 to 12 open June 25 at East West and South schools with early week sign ups.
Partly cloudy today and tonight with little temperature change. High near 95 Tuesday. Low around 70. Missouri River stages show Jefferson City at 8.3 feet, up 0.1, with other gauges listed for Boonville Hermann and Osage River, Lake of the Ozarks at 0.49 feet and no change.
ST JOSEPH June 12 That Was a mighty fine vacation Robert Daniels administrative assistant to Post master Theo J Quinn went to Florida. Picked up a fine tan or sunburn. His feet were sunburned so he could not wear shoes on return. He is on sick leave but hopes to return tomorrow.
President Eisenhower signed three routine documents and initiated two confidential papers as doctors reported another good day on the road to recovery. From Walter Reed, Hagerty said he cannot attend the Panama heads of state conference and may postpone three weeks. Doctors estimate convalescence four to six weeks, with stable vitals and rest periods, while two feeding tubes remain and no food by mouth.
A North Carolina woman, Alicia Louis Conant, 32, was killed in a head on collision eight miles east of Kingdom City on Highway 40. Four others were injured, including two from Charlotte, N C. Curtis was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road.
Newton Mass June 12 District Attorney Ephraim Martin called a “flagrant mistake” the cause of four deaths at Newton-Wellesley Hospital Sunday night. Gordon M McMullen 53 and Marion C Du Mont 55 were given sodium nitrite instead of sodium phosphate the latter a mild cathartic. McMullen died within ten minutes and Mrs Du Mont within thirty. An inquest will probe possible criminal negligence. An unidentified male pharmacy employee was removed from regular duties during the investigation. McMullin’s son credited a student nurse with spotting and tracing the deadly switch potentially saving others. The cathartic was to be given before abdominal X rays.
Attorneys for Matthew J. Connelly and T. Lamar Caudle urged a federal jury to acquit the former Truman aides, contending the government failed to prove conspiracy in an income tax case. The defense argued Caudle acted with integrity and Connelly should be judged on solid proofs, not rumor. The case was sent to the jury for deliberation.
A Senate agriculture subcommittee approved a House passed bill to transfer five acres in Rolla Missouri to the town Chamber of Commerce. The action follows the house approval earlier today as the legislation advances.
A Daily Capital News survey shows farmers view insect infestation as the county’s top problem this spring, surpassing drought. Reports cite pea aphids and dense young grasshoppers damaging alfalfa, red clover, and other crops while opinions on drought relief vary, with most supporting aid.
Railroads operating in Missouri asked the Interstate Commerce Commission to compel the Missouri Public Service Commission to raise intrastate freight rates on heavy commodities to parity with interstate charges. They argued Missouri's 6 percent intrastate increases and exemptions cut revenues by more than $500,000 annually.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities began contempt proceedings against Paul Robeson after a heated hearing in which the Negro singer denounced Americans as bad and ashamed. Chairman Walter adjourned the session then a closed vote recommended contempt. the full House would decide on citation.
Federal and state agriculture officials will tour drought parched northwestern Missouri next week. State Commissioner L. C. Carpenter called the drought emergency committee to Bethany to meet a federal agriculture representative and area farm leaders. The tour ends Tuesday evening after inspecting most of the 11 counties Nodaway Worth Gentry Morrison Mercer Grundy Putnam Sullivan Livingston DeKalb Davies. Perry Compton flew to Washington to press for a new drought survey as the area again suffers water shortages.
The United States rejected a Red Chinese proposal for a prompt foreign minister meeting. It accused Beijing of refusing a meaningful renunciation of force over Formosa and called for release of 13 Americans still held in Red China prisons despite a Sept. 10 agreement. Ambassadors Johnson and Wang Ping-nan have met at Geneva since last Aug. 1 on prisoners and Formosa.
Senate leader George of Georgia takes the lead in restoring part of the foreign aid bill after President Eisenhower urged partial restoration from Walter Reed Hospital. He aims to add about 600 million to the House’s 5.8 billion program, with NATO and mutual security funding in focus.
A Senate subcommittee wrapped up a second Missouri ASC hearing amid claims of dismissals by chairman Murray C. Colbert. Sen. Symington urged a possible wider probe, cites about Boone County removals and questioned wheat yield handling while Sen. Humphrey pressed for clarity on the grounds for dismissal and appeals.

Jeffrey P. Hillerson a Missouri Republican candidate for Congress called President Eisenhower’s surgery a successful test of his heart at a June 12 picnic. Hillerson said he spoke by telephone with Howard Pyle White House aide who indicated Eisenhower’s recuperative powers could handle emergencies and he expects the President to run again despite the illness.
The House Banking Committee approved an omnibus housing bill to build 180000 new public housing units and provide billions of dollars in credit and insurance to boost home construction. The 14 to 6 vote favored the bill, which surpassed President Eisenhower's request and is certain to provoke a House floor fight.
In the American League Kansas City defeated Washington 9 to 0 in a 15 inning game while New York beat Chicago 4 to 2 Detroit prevailed over Baltimore 8 to 1 and Boston defeated Cleveland 9 to 7 In the National League Brooklyn won 6 to 4 over St Louis Chicago topped New York 8 to 5 Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 4 to 2 and Philadelphia won 5 to 2 against Milwaukee
