Area Farmers Seek Local Control to Halt Floods

A Missouri River flood control hearing heard farmers urge watershed districts and mixed local federal action to curb floods. Speakers from Minnesota and Missouri emphasized rapid upstream dam development, faster work downstream after main stems finish, and avoiding costly factions. They called for cooperation, sooner federal funding, and addressing archeological remains in reservoir areas. The commission plans further hearings in Hermann, St Charles, St Paul, Denver, Worland, and Nebraska through July.

Flat Tire Apparently Saves $50,000 Cargo

A stolen truck loaded with liquor valued at 50 000 was abandoned in St Louis apparently because of a flat tire. Driver Robert Eaton notified police he parked the tractor trailer in front of his house and it was missing this morning. A filling station operator reported an abandoned truck at his station later, which proved to be the stolen vehicle with cargo intact. Also reports a prisoner custody return and an escapee at large. B-29 Bomber Crashes In Pacific Ocean

Honolulu dispatch reports a B 29 bomber crashed 73 miles west of Kwajalein in the central Pacific at 2 49 p m Hawaiian time. One survivor was sighted in a life raft as rescue efforts began from Kwajalein island with a Navy Albatross seaplane joining the search.

Tax Offer Reported in Meyers Case for $429000

Bennett E Meyers a former Air Force general with prior perjury and tax fraud sentences reportedly offered the government a 429000 compromise on tax claims. IRS agent in charge Max Weaver said Washington officials were reviewing the offer in two pending cases. one for 216000 personal taxes and one for 213000 business taxes. Meyers previously claimed poverty to dodge a 15080 fine for tax evasion and was linked to a Senate probe about an aviation parts firm with dummy officers doing business with the Air Force.

Rhee Backers Demand End to Assembly Rally in Pusan

In Pusan over 10,000 supporters of President Rhee urged dissolution of the Korean National Assembly. They denounced the Assembly as corrupt and traitorous and accused it of foreign influence. The crowd remained orderly with no violence as factions sought a compromise amid rising demonstrations and tense mood.

Fines 4 Motorists In Traffic Counts

Four motorists pleaded guilty in magistrate court to traffic violations. Paul Prost 37 of 218 W Filmore St was fined 10 dollars and costs for careless and reckless driving after being clocked at 55 mph in a 40 mph zone on Highway 50. Bobby Krosark 17 Owensville was fined 5 dollars and costs for careless and reckless driving after passing on a crest with poor visibility. Otto Tichielkamp 36 Osage City was fined 5 dollars and costs for careless driving after passing another vehicle on a curve on Highway 30. Paul Beard 612 State St was fined 5 dollars and costs for driving a truck without a 1952 chauffeur license.

Panyushkin Named Soviet Envoy to China

Moscow radio announced Alexander S. Panyushkin former Soviet ambassador to Washington will be the new Soviet envoy to Red China. Mrs Karl Munch wife of the ambassador in Washington will be the main speaker at the Missouri Federation of Republican Women s Clubs two day meeting in London Missouri Hotel. Over 300 alternates and delegates from 145 clubs are expected to attend.

Steel union session to map Murray plan on strike

Pittsburgh June 12 AP The United Steelworkers leaders prepare a session to hear Philip Murray as they discuss strategy for the steel strike and potential wage policy changes. The executive board and wage policy committee will join 36 other leaders in an all day meeting. In St Louis talks between Southwestern Bell and the CIO Communications Workers union recessed after progress reported. union negotiators set to attend their national convention in Cleveland.
