Jobless list jumps in Mid-Missouri May 1971 unemployment figures

Missouri Division of Employment Security reports May 1971 unemployment payments statewide fell to $7.18 million from April’s $9.23 million, with initial claims down to 23,903. In Mid-Missouri the four county area Boone Callaway Cooper Howard saw payments rise 59 percent year over year, while Jefferson City and Columbia offices showed mixed shifts in relief disbursements.

Raids and clashes stretch Vietnam front near Khe Sanh

Carpenter dispute briefs due in wage quarrel case

The Jefferson City Contractors Association and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters move toward a settlement with briefs filed for federal labor arbitration. Final arguments were to be presented to Referee Rev. Leo Brown in St. Louis. Carpenters seek a 10 cent raise by April 18 and 20 cents by October. a two day walkout occurred in April, ended after a restraining order by Judge James T. Riley. Brown is to rule soon, expected to settle the dispute.

Skullduggery hits collector fees bill in Missouri

State Rep. George W. Parker charged political skullduggery in the Missouri House Fees and Salaries Committee after Boone County Collector Woodrow Wilson received reduced commissions. Auditor Kit Bond cited a statute misalignment causing the lower pay. Parker proposed a salary plan for collectors, which passed a committee vote but was killed before the session end. He vowed to reintroduce the measure in 1972.

Election set June 29 for O'Connor's seat

Gov Warren E Hearnes ordered St Louis County election officials to set June 29 to select a successor to Rep Patrick J O'Connor who died June 6 at Bridgeton after a throat abscess. The vote will fill the 36th district seat the four term representative held. Republican committees will submit nominees.

YMCA Coffee House Opens Saturday for Teens

The YMCA will host a Teen Coffee House this Saturday June 12 from 8:00 to 11:00 P.M. at the Y Center in the rear of the 100 block of East High. Candlelight songs music and dancing are planned. Admission is free with refreshments available at a charge.

The Missouri Conservation department led national wins at the American Association for Conservation Information conference in Springfield. Herschel Bledsoe won his category for Woody and the Tall Timber Trio, while Glenn Chambers’s Return of the Wild Turkey took second in film.
