Thirty five Cole county students were among 1,788 candidates at the University of Missouri 108th commencement. President Harry S. Truman delivered the address and received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Local graduates include Henry Ane Gerson and numerous others from Jefferson City, Russellville, and Centertown. Faculty emeritus honors went to Dr. Hay Gunnison Brown, Dr. Eli Stuart Haynes, and Dr. T. J. Talbert for long service.

Mrs. Joe Becklenberg 41 died early yesterday at her home in Chamois a lifelong resident and Catholic church member born Feb 26 1869 daughter of Daniel and Hunter. Her husband died about two years ago. Joseph T Barton, 32, once a Capital City resident, died May 6 in East Liverpool Ohio when a truck he drove overturned on a home lawn. He was pinned in the wreckage and died after 45 minutes of rescue attempts. His mother Mrs J O Barton now lives in St Louis.

University gifts total 205000 for year including art collection
Dr Middebush announced gifts and grants totaling 205223 for the year with 124897 for research. He noted the Scruggs Vandervoort Barney art collection of 99 paintings valued over 75000. The ceremony included military notes as Truman conferred ROTC commissions and naval officer designations on graduates. One degree was awarded posthumously to William Donald Reed of Ellington, electrocuted in a dorm incident.
