Ownership of bodies subject of negotiations

The Cole County Court plans to meet with state corrections officials next week to determine who should bear burial costs for a state penitentiary inmate who died after an assault. The county has not paid such costs before, and Boone County may be liable since the death occurred there. The body was returned for autopsy, then buried locally, with donation to the university considered but declined due to death circumstances.

Lehr backs Broomfield in Missouri congressional bid

State Auditor George Lehr campaigned with Charlie Broomfield in Kirksville endorsing him for Congress from Missouri. Lehr praised Broomfield as a teacher of government and longtime public servant, with a strong record and integrity. They appeared at a Kiwanis Club event coffee and a North East Missouri State University reception.

Church to Burn Mortgage at Trinity Lutheran

Trinity Lutheran Church to burn mortgage during Sunday ceremonies marking the end of indebtedness after a 0 payment on a 975000 building project on a 17 acre site near Highway 54 South. Present officers from 1961 will participate. Public tours, a Bicentennial Children's Drama, and contests follow. The congregation now numbers 750 families and 1800 members. the school has 285 pupils.

Bible school to explore old time religion at Brazito church

The Central United Church of Christ will host a five day vacation Bible school in Brazito starting Monday. Taught entirely by church women, the program traces four traditions that formed the United Church of Christ and includes early American crafts and music. The final class at the Old Ambrose School will be taught by Mrs. Carol Ellinger and features a Cole County Historical Society lecture for fourth graders. The week ends with a German style potluck supper and student crafts on display. The event welcomes children from three to sixth grade and is open to all faiths. Taney County open case on Illinois lawyer found near Branson

The coroner ruled the March 1 death of Illinois lawyer John Lorek undetermined and not foul play. Lorek, 38, from Alton DL, was found at the bottom of a 35 foot cliff near Branson after police stopped his truck for a weaving trailer. Investigators noted a stolen boat pile and missing wallet with a check, and an Illinois investigator once suggested murder.
