Recommends enlarging areas of White House plan

A $32 35 million program to build a spacious presidential office building and expand White House grounds was recommended to President Eisenhower. The plan envisages razing the old State War Navy building west of the White House for a new presidential staff office, remodeling the west wing for visiting dignitaries, and adding an executive office building on Pennsylvania Ave. Congress has authorized some office construction, but approval this session seems unlikely amid economy concerns.

Grain futures sink on damp harvest fears and planting rush

Chicago on June 3 saw weak demand at the Board of Trade as most grain futures slipped. Corn hit new seasonal lows amid clear weather aiding plantings, with old style wheat down 1 1 4 to 1 5 1 2 percent and new style wheat 1 to 1 5 percent lower. Oats, rye, and soybeans also declined while a 30 day forecast of cooler, wetter weather briefly spurred buying in wheat before later liquidation as wet harvest fears grew. Some Southwestern winter wheat may need drying to prevent spoilage, traders said.
