Washington June 3 AP Southern coal operators proposed paying miners 12.70 dollars for an eight hour day if John L. Lewis drops portal to portal travel allowances won during the war. The deal would raise inside day pay by 85 cents compared with nine hours underground. UMW officials called the offer unrealistic and negotiations continued, with Lewis and northern western operators in deadlock over 13.05 for eight hours and an NW offer of 11.35. The question remains whether South operators will press separate talks to reach a contract.
