Missouri residents will require courses in US and Missouri constitutions and American history from seventh grade through college. The law, signed by Gov. Donnelly, targets civic understanding and counters foreign ideologies.
Washington predicts Congress may cut short its summer recess if a coal strike threatens and the labor disputes bill becomes law. Sen Ellender says a strike after June 30 could force government to intervene, possibly shortening vacations as Congress acts to avert work stoppages.
Two minor accidents were reported in the city Sunday with no injuries. Damage totaled $5 when a city bus driven by Oliver Shepp ers scraped a truck driven by Albert Ruettgers of Linn while backing into a parking place. About 5 damage was done to the Newsam Baking Company truck. The second crash occurred about 7:10 p.m. at High and Broadway as Clem Holscher backed into Fritz Koelling from Cedar City, causing about $20 damage to Koelling’s vehicle.
Mrs Florence E White died at her daughter Mrs Ralph Bradley’s Green Berry Road home at 11 5 p m Sunday after a heart attack at 9 30 p m She lived in Marceline Mo and came to stay with her husband for medical treatment She was born August 18 1869 in Westville Mo to John L and Gussie Green A Methodist Church member in Marceline the body was taken there for burial Surviving are husband and daughter in Marceline
Albert R. Weber aged 93 a resident of 93th West High street died suddenly of a heart attack at his Home in House Springs Mississippi Saturday afternoon. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth and six daughters Clara Juliana Angela Marie Lorene Virginia Constance and Mandel a grandfather brother and an uncle. Funeral services will be from House Springs Tuesday.
More than four hundred Jefferson City salespeople and business leaders have enrolled for three sales training and personnel efficiency lectures by E. C. House. The first session is Monday night June 16 with subsequent lectures on June 23 and June 27. Registration and seating require ID cards issued through the Chamber of Commerce. Topics include Can You Imagine Telescoping and Shifting the Gears. Lectures run 7 to 9 p.m.
A. A. Marshall for St Louis trucking firms asked Missouri PSC on Monday to approve about a ten percent rate increase in selected categories. He argued the PSC’s last August less-carload schedules are inadequate and that higher gates are needed to offset lower revenue and rising costs on light loads. Affected cities include Cape Girardeau Sikeston and Ste Genevieve. The PSC took the filing under advisement as intra-state freight is moved from southeast Missouri to St Louis.
Bela Varga speaker of the Hungarian house and No 2 in Nagy era fled to evade Communist arrest and aimed for the American zone of Austria. A close friend said he crossed toward Copron near the Austrian border after presiding over a committee meeting that named Lajos Dinnyes premier. Nagy hoped to join a government in exile. Communist threats loomed on Treason charges.
In Greenwood Missouri on June 2 AP Miss Dorothy Timmerman a 16 year old from Kansas City drowned when a boat carrying five people capsized near shore. Four others including a mother and two children were rescued. Rescued were Clifford Humphrey 50 Shirley Baryber 12 Mrs Rita Schofield 22 and Ronald Dale Schofield 4 all of Kansas City. The boat capsize occurred about 200 yards from shore as rescuers pushed the craft ashore. Humphrey the boat owner swam to a nearby island.
The Indonesian Republican cabinet met at Jogjakarta to decide on accepting or rejecting the Netherlands final offer on independence. The sessions were to last several days as a Netherlands army communique accused the republican forces of widespread truce violations in the prior week.
Thefts of an automobile and a bicycle were reported Monday but both vehicles were recovered shortly after. A 1940 Buick sedan was taken from John Canady of 617 East High Street and found in the 500 block of East McCarty Street around 3 PM. The bicycle stolen from Kenneth Hackman of 1215 St Marys Boulevard during a Sunday morning at St Peters Church was located later the same day in the 1300 block rear West High Street.
Cecil Meldrum was taken into custody around 6 am Sunday after police found him asleep in his car in the 300 block on Manila Street. He was committed to jail under an old police court sentence.
Judge Andy Schwaller ordered Meldrum to serve 380 days under a March 29 sentence after pleading guilty to peace disturbance at 515 West Elm Street. Police reported finding a .22 rifle and a crowbar in Meldrum’s car Sunday morning. A separate city smoke ordinance violation against Capitol Brewery was continued to June 25.
