The U S Presbyterian General Assembly in Columbus criticized Nazi religious aims and avoided endorsing protests against Supreme Court reorganization. It urged preservation of church and state liberties, called for retirement age 70 for pastors, and proposed restoring pastors’ salaries amid economic downturn.
Radio and screen star Bob Burns married his secretary Harriet Madela Foster in Las Vegas at the home of Rev. Albert C. Melton. Burns, 45, and Foster, 28, used aliases aboard arrival. First wife Elizabeth Fisher died last August. Burns has a 15 year old son, Robert Jr.
Four people were cut and bruised in a head on collision near the Moreau bridge on highway 54 south of the city Sunday afternoon. Edwin Gutting of St. Louis and Jack Onger of this city drove the cars. Miss Selma Will, R. A. Will, and Mr. Onger sustained facial and hand injuries and were treated at the local hospital.
Norma Talmadge film star was stricken at her Santa Monica home and rushed to St. Vincent's hospital. She recently left a hospital stay for chronic appendicitis and is married to comedian George Jessell.
In St Louis May 31 AP a 35 year old unidentified man with bullet holes in his head was unearthed from a one foot deep grave in a secluded wooded area. August Kein and his son discovered the scene after hearing a dog bark. Deputy Sheriff Doran indicated the body likely had been buried about a week, with a boxer fighting stance tattoo on the chest.
Paris reports Germany approved a Franco British plan to set up naval safety zones near Spain to defuse the Deutschland bombing crisis. French and German officials warned against widening the Spanish conflict and urged adherence to the non intervention committee while considering high seas zones if belligerents fail to agree.
Pope Pius XI postpones the inauguration of a pontifical academy and a world radio broadcast amid the Spanish war crisis. Vatican sources cite health concerns but speculation ties the move to Germany and the Mazie church controversy. German attendees or their absence is noted as a possible factor.
